Vizquel makes the team

Omar Vizquel has cracked the Toronto Blue Jays roster.

Blue Jays general manger Alex Anthopoulos announced Wednesday that the team will place the 44-year-old Vizquel on the 40-man roster next week. In a corresponding move, the club optioned Mike McCoy to Triple-A Las Vegas.

Vizquel will fill a utility infielder role for the Jays. Earlier in spring training the veteran shortstop said that this season, his 24th in the big leagues, will likely be his last.

It's like having an extra coach in the dugout. Every team that has aspirations for competing needs a guy like that on the bench.

I'd rather have Mike McCoy on the roster than Fransisco though. McCoy can play every single position on the team except catcher and is a good pinch runner. Fransisco really doesn't bring anything to the table for us.

I'm totally in favor of the bench consisting of Mathis, Vizquel, Davis & McCoy. It would be one of the better bench collections in baseball.

So what makes AA, a genius compared to us, stick with a bum like Francisco? Didn't we go through this last season with Rivera/Patterson/Nix?

A right handed bat who can play LF for our guy who provides terrible defense and can't hit LHP?

I'm not saying that is the exact reason but I'm sure AA picked up Francisco for a reason. He isn't stupid.

This isn't Jayson Nix we're talking about, Francisco is not a bum. And he's not starting, but hopefully he takes ABs away against left-handed starters from guys like Lind and Thames.

I was really hoping we'd be done with this type of move (like we lived with last season with Rivera/Nix/Patterson) and we'd just bring up our best team. Gomes is versatile, so is McCoy, and I would have liked to see if Snider could have stayed up and played a more pivotal role, but I get why he's not here.

Funny to think that Omar Vizquel is the only player on the Jays that was playing in the MLB when we last won the 'ship.

He's gotta be one of the last players in all of MLB too though right?

When he signed his deal he was going to have to have his arm literally fall off in a ST game not to make the big club. That or I guess if McCoy or Valbuena had just gone bananas offensively, but we all knew that wasn't going to happen.
