McGowan injury *Update* Out until June

Post#1 » by baulderdash77 » Sun Apr 1, 2012 8:26 pm

Maybe the 1st or 2nd week of May by my math.

"Let's say he misses two and a half weeks, he'll need two and a half more weeks to get back to the game status he was in when he came out," Farrell said.

"I would think at a minimum [two rehab starts]. We're certainly not going to rush anything. As I stated the other day, you get any kind of foot or leg injury we don't want that to show up in his shoulder and we'll take every precaution needed."

Ugh. That sucks.

The only good news is we only need around 2 starts from our 5th spot during April.

Taking a look at the schedule- there is an off day on May 7th that is a logical place to make a change in the rotation & reset everything. That should give Drabek & Cecil 4 and 5 starts each until then. There's a couple days off where they could go short rotation in that time and squeeze a few Morrow or Romero starts in.

That seems like a fair evaluation period to see who sticks in the rotation when McGowan comes back. I would bet that a trade could happen around that time as well.

This. I actually am beginning to have confidence in him again. It is Cecil that I am worried about.

If Drabek can contain his emotions, he is a starter on our team. I'm pretty confident in his stuff- he has great stuff. I'd like to see him get 5 really good starts like last year and then come into May on fire. That would be a good signal for our team for future success.

Not a big deal. That will allow McGowan to pitch deeper into the season than he would have otherwise (assuming he still can be an effective, healthy pitcher) and it allows Drabek more time to show whether he's fixed his mental issues on the mound.

I still have a gut feeling McGowan will never again play a meaningful stretch in the bigs, I honestly hope I am wrong.

Yeah there's nothing really negative here.

It's not his shoulder, so the injury itself is nothing to worry over

And as you mentioned, if he can be effective throughout the season, then this just moves the timetable a month as to when you would need to shut him down anyway

I'm not worried about Drabek establishing overcoming the mental issues that plagued him last year, I think he'll be fine. I'm more concerned that Cecil may be tossing batting practice out there and hope he can actually make it until early-mid May

That's about as long as I'd expect them to stick with Cecil if he doesn't put it together.
Nick Nurse recounting his first meeting with Kawhi:
“We could have gone forever. (Raptors management) kept knocking on the door and I was like, ‘A couple more minutes.’ Because we were really into it."

*Edit to thread - John Lott reporting that the injury is not responding and he's going to be out until June. Tough luck for Dustin - again- I guess it's time for Carenno to cement his spot or by June there may be another one of our prospects ready to take a look.

It is a familiar refrain: No one really knows when Dustin McGowan will start throwing again, but his latest injury has persisted longer than expected.

When he does resume throwing, he will “start over altogether,” as though he were back at the beginning of spring training, says general manager Alex Anthopoulos.

That could mean that Toronto Blue Jays fans will not see McGowan in a game before June, although no can can say for sure.

Richard Griffin chimes in too - there's no timetable for his return.

We can't say definitively that he'll be out until June based on that comment. Either way, I'm not too worried about it. He wasn't going to be able to pitch a full season, anyway.

The Toronto Blue Jays are taking more precautions with starter Dustin McGowan after he experienced some soreness in his shoulder while compensating for the plantar fasciitis in his right foot.

i know the only reason why we kept him cause he was a first rounder and they didnt want another chris carpenter situation, but at what point do the jays just give up or trade him? i know they just extended him but this guy is fragile as fuqq. injuires upon injuries. put him in the bullpen role, why are they so keen to make him a starter again? he would look nice in the closer role.

They just gave him a multi-million dollar contract like last week. They're not giving up on him (and nobody is going to trade them anything for value for McGowan).

Its worth noting (this was mentioned in the broadcast) that he had an innings cap anyways, so it's not like he could have potentially made more than 24ish starts.

Great news. He'll be able to pitch in October.
