Frasor on 2011 Bullpen

Post#1 » by Attonitus » Tue Apr 3, 2012 10:43 pm

Found this tidbit in the star today pretty interesting, for him to talk about this publicly it had to be pretty bad. I have a feeling the culprits are playing on the Mets right now but that's just my guess.

But it seems what hurt the Jays’ 2011 bullpen was about more than just the regular ups and downs of a 162-game season.

“We had our issues,” said Frasor, a veteran of eight major-league bullpens.

When asked to explain, Frasor is quiet for a few seconds before he answers.

“We weren’t a tight-knit group down there, you know? Usually, the teams I’ve been on, the bullpen hangs out with bullpen, the position players hang out with position players, starting pitchers hang out with starting pitchers, (but last year), the bullpen, we weren’t that close.

“We didn’t pick each other up, you know? That’s what went wrong. It just wasn’t a good mix of guys down there. It’s hard to explain.”

This year is different, Frasor says.

“It has a better feel, it really does, and I’m not just saying that because I should say that at this point. It does have a better feel, it’s just” — again here, Frasor takes a long pause — “better people.”

There was another article with one of last year's bullpen guys saying that last year they didn't hang out and mostly were divided into groups of two or three guys that would get along.

But what is this, Highschool? I don't chill or hang out with everyone in my department, especially at the same time.

No, not high school. It's a big-league ball club. Every single player spends seven straight months away from his veritable home (not including postseason). He plays half the time on the field of his employer; the other half he spends playing all throughout the continent. He receives three days off a month. Any group of 25 men is guaranteed to form subgroups. In fact, any number of men above four--sometimes even three--will produce this dynamic.

Please do not compare your 'department' to a Major League Baseball team.

I don't believe one needs to be chummy-chummy with teammates to be successful in sports, but you do have to support each other as coworkers and colleagues. If they don't have that, or there is friction, then people will not work well.

We might blame Rauch and Francisco for being douches, but recall that they were the ones who were not playing well. If anything, one might surmise that they were uncomfortable with someone(s) on the team that affected their play.
