OT: New season, new drama for Sox

So apparently on Sunday Bobby Valentine told reporters that Youklis didn't look like the player he was in seasons past and that caused a little **** storm in their clubhouse.

The original quote from Bobby V was:

"I don't think he's as physically or emotionally into the game as he has been in the past for some reason,'' Valentine said Sunday. "But [on Saturday] it seemed, you know, he's seeing the ball well, got those two walks, got his on-base percentage up higher than his batting average, which is always a good thing, and he'll move on from there."

He has since said it wasn't meant to motivate Youklis and that his comment was misinterpreted because according to him he was talking about his swing.

Of course Pedroia decided to back up Youk with this:

"I really don't know what Bobby is trying to do," Pedroia said Monday. "That's not the way we go about our stuff around here. He'll figure that out. The whole team is behind Youk. We have each other's backs here."

Pedroia was then asked whether he thought Valentine perhaps was trying to light a fire under Youkilis, who is hitting .200 on the young season.

"Maybe that works in Japan," Pedroia said, referring to Valentine's successful stints as a manager in that country.

Now even though it wasn't a big comment from Pedroia, it still reeks of an "us vs the manager" type of attitude. They all don't seem to be on the same page, especially when he says of his manager, "He'll figure that out".

Whatever it is, the point of this thread was that the Jays could benefit from the dysfunction they have going on there.

Bobby Valentine isn't going to last to the end of the month if he keeps going off like this. How out of touch can he be?

What a ****show in Boston.

I give him a week or two 'til he's wearing a Rangers cap during the Rangers/Bruins series in a press conference and talking about how he thinks all Irish people are jerks and he's going to bench Big Papi until he gets his weight under 200 lbs.

Had a feeling things would change after Francona left.

It really is a treat to watch Francona, Hersheiser and Shulman doing play by play though.

I don't think Bobby V could have had a worse first couple weeks if he tried. Such an enjoyable train wreck.

This is good (and very predictable).

If things don't turn around for boston, we could see him fired or maybe the red sox will trade away some guys.

I love watching the team implode. Bobby V is a disaster so far and I'm loving it.

Bobby Valentine was out of touch in 2002. He was probably out of touch in 1992, as well. Why Boston's front office felt that he was the right fit for a team in turmoil, I'll never understand.

Also, Bard-as-starter is going to get pretty silly if Bobby V allows him to throw 110+ pitches, as he did today. That's a long leash for a guy with a decade of experience starting, when you're talking about their second start of the season. It's entirely insane when the pitcher in question has only begun to stretch out. Allowing him to remain in the game to face Longoria, after giving up two walks and a single consecutively as his already-shaky control departed, is the sort of thing that really ought to make a with-cause firing possible.

C'mon Schad, he's gotta keep Justin Thomas from having too many multi-inning relief appearances. You can't just squander valuable resources.

Yeah Valentine is an idiot that's gonna get fired very soon but what Jays fans need to be really excited about is what the situation says about Ben Cherington's judgement. Its a bit early but combine the Valentine hire with the insane Scutaro trade(and subsequently replacing him with Aviles and Punto), i'm glad we have don't have another bright GM in the division.

Seriously, what has happened with their bullpen to leave Justin Thomas and Matt Albers as the tandem to keep them in the game against a rival. Granted, they actually did the job, but yikes.

Well to be a little fair it was an early game and 4 guys threw yesterday. He does seem to have run away from Melancon in a hurry though.

Yeah, it's more the fact that those guys are options at all. Thomas was released by Pittsburgh; Albers is entering his third season of being largely useless. They were up against it financially, and bullpens are unpredictable creatures no matter the personnel, but for a team with the resources they possess to break camp with a pitching staff that riddled with question marks is crazy.

The red sox didnt really address/resolve the problem they had last year. They pretty much have the same players they did last year. And really, did they think Bobby V was the guy to get to resolve the problem.

Reading some of those articles at the end of last season, that clubhouse is dysfunctional as it comes. The shyte with Lester, Lackey and Beckett allowed to drink during games was one thing. The fact apparently NOBODY on the team like Ellsbury, and that Jacoby already has one foot out the door to the Giants, doesn't help. Youkilis is a has-been but he's way too popular to call out. This ain't '86, Bobby, and guys like Gary Carter aren't there to watch your back anymore. Players don't respect coaches anymore. They view them as just any other management type. I am surprised any name manager walked into that situation knowing how John Henry cut the feet out from Francona, and in fact even publically humiliated him.

Money talks I guess.

I don't see what Bobby did wrong in this particular case. Youk and Pedroia are just idiots. Pedo is one of the biggest douche bags in the league.

Nor was Youkilis willing to talk after a second straight injury-marred year in which his production suffered. Youkilis, by nearly all accounts, grew more detached and short-tempered as he tried to play through his ailments. He also factored in a divisive clubhouse issue as the only player last year who publicly criticized Jacoby Ellsbury - several others privately chided the outfielder - when Ellsbury missed all but 18 games with rib injuries.

The episode chilled Ellsbury’s relationship with the team. As joyful as Ellsbury’s MVP-caliber season was to many fans, his interaction in the Sox clubhouse was limited mostly to his friend Jed Lowrie. Ellsbury produced one of the most sensational seasons for a leadoff hitter in franchise history - he also ranked with Pedroia, Aceves, and Jonathan Papelbon among the team’s hardest workers - but he contributed little to the clubhouse culture.

Then they punted Lowrie for nothing.
