Through mid-April, Sportsnet’s Jays audience was up by 54 per cent over the previous year. Opening day’s TV audience shattered Sportsnet’s previous record by 36 per cent.

I know that last year's average ratings were about 500k per game and that the home opener was 1.7 million.

If it's true that the average ratings are up around the 700k figure for this year, that is a very valuable platform for 162 games this year in terms of revenue generation.

Rogers is paying the Jays nowhere near the market rate for those incredibly valuable rights and yet they still use the excuse of low attendance not to spend money. Incredible.

This is all great and it's exciting to see, but marketing will only get you so far. The product has to deliver too. So far it's looking pretty good but not great. Imagine how much more they could be getting with someone like Prince Fielder on board.

And ya Mufasa, the marketing has been very well executed, the old uni's being back are slick. Everything seems to be coming together quite nicely. But if by June, they are right back to the same old .500ish record, the ratings will drop as summer approaches and people find things to do wit their time.

Yet they still refuse to broadcast spring training games.

I could see them getting good numbers leading up to the season, but they don't want to spend the money I guess.

It's frustrating that all these teams like Texas, Anahiem and New York are making crazy amounts of revenue off television yet we get high ratings as well yet only make a small fraction of what those teams make.

I could be wrong, but I remember someone posting an article about it..

I think it's because they want to build more hype up for the season. Like, you hear the jays won and you want the season to come so bad, but if you see the ST games, there's just not the same amount of hype.

Sorry the Blue Jays average ratings for the home opener was 1.325 million peaking at 1.7 million in the 9th inning. Still it's incredible the TV ratings they get. Last year's home opener drew 976k and for the season they averaged 505k in 2011.

By game in the first week they drew:

1,325
959
430 (day game)
665
796
611

That was their first week.

Better I think.

I think I remember hearing last year that the Jays lead the league in ratings.

Here is the top 5 from last year. The US and Canadian ratings calculations are different though. US measured by households tuned in and Canadian by people tuned in. So I believe the conversion is roughly double- The Jays would have ~250,000 households last year and ~350,000 this year. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

TEAM 2011 NO. OF HOUSEHOLDS
New York Yankees 319,000
Philadelphia 276,000
Boston 192,000
New York Mets 163,000
San Francisco 127,000

Not surprising, the interest is there, especially among the younger generation. They just need to capitalize on it.

Are you guys on glue? Rogers owns Sportsnet and the Blue Jays. It doesn't matter what Sportsnet pays.

I think the point is they could generate more money by not having it exclusively on Sportsnet in selling off the rights to broadcast.

Rogers is all about the money so they probably see this is a big opportunity not to pump money in to the Jays side by selling off rights (then they get more criticism for not spending money on the team) but they can sell advertising on Sportsnet and that money gets funneled up to Rogers through Sportsnet.

It's all about the Benjamins!!!!!
