OT: Rivera out for year with torn ACL

Mariano Rivera was carted off the field in the middle of Yankees batting practice with his right knee propped up.

Rivera injured the knee while chasing fly balls in batting practice. At 6:10 local time here, he was running back toward the fence, reached out to grab the ball and then spilled onto the warning track. He began writhing in pain almost immediately. The team sent him for an MRI after being examined by the Yankees training staff and Kansas City associate team physician Dr. Joe Noland.

The preliminary diagnosis is a twisted right knee. He is currently at Kansas City Med West hospital receiving an MRI.

He was smiling as a John Deer groundskeeper's cart pulled off the field and was brought into the clubhouse on the shoulders of manager Joe Girardi.

Not to be insensitive or anything, but I think that the definition of "over-the-hill" should be changed to "one who gets injured while shagging flyballs".

I had no idea Jayson Nix was on the Yankees. Could Jayson Nix be the one to end Rivera's career...

Might put the yankees in the market for another bullpen arm now as well as a starting pitcher.

Seriously, AA... if you want a year to go for it, its now. Get a 1B and another starter here and we can roll this division up like a bitch. We have four competent starters (for once), and a lineup just missing one more big bat. We haven't been since close since probably 2000.

Sportsnet said it's a torn ACL.
Possibly career over?

Not something you wish on a class act like Rivera. Heard Girardi claiming torn ACL which would pretty much mean he's done for the year.

Not that you can predict anything but seems like a perfect storm developing for the Jays to make the playoffs which makes the lack of big name signing even more depressing as a fan. With everything going on, how much better would they look with Darvish or Fielder.

Hopefully if we're still in the hunt they can make a move for a first basemen with pop.

I did the same. Picked up Robertson for now; we'll see if he closes.

Yeah, much though it helps us, that blows. Would hate for his career to end that way.

It's too bad. As much as he was a Jay killer over the years, I respect Rivera. He's probably the all time greatest relief pitcher and this is not the way I'd like to see him to go out.

On the other hand, I have Soriano on my fantasy team so he's looking like a great start while Santos is hurt for me.

Just saw an interview with him and that was tough to watch. He looked completely devastated.

As much as I hate the yanks, this sucks. A great athlete and the career he's had, going out this way would suck.

Wishing him luck and hopefully he can come back next year for one last season

Robertson might be a better reliever than Rivera right now, anyway. Tough break for him, but this doesn't hurt the Yankees significantly.

Yeah, if Robertson was somehow available in anybody's league before tonight, it must not be a particularly deep one. He's been amazing for a while now.

That's why it hurts them, IMO. Robertson becomes the saves guy, and probably features in a few less high-leverage 7th/8th inning situations as a result. And filling that vacated role will be one of the less-proven trio of Boone Logan, Rafael Soriano or Cory Wade. Probably not a huge difference over the course of the season, but it doesn't help matters.
