JAYS CATCHERS: HANDS OFF!
The Diamondbacks, among other clubs, would love to get their hands on one of the Blue Jays’ catchers. But don’t count on Toronto moving either J.P. Arencibia or Triple-A catcher Travis d’Arnaud before the season is over.
Arencibia, 26, is batting only .234/.277/.364, but the Jays are thrilled with his game-calling and overall defense. Such attributes are difficult to measure, but the team’s rotation is full of pitchers who are difficult to catch, making Arencibia’s work all the more impressive.
D’Arnaud, 23, is batting .271/.342/.402 at Triple A, but this is only his first season at that level and the Pacific Coast League is hitter-friendly. The Jays don’t want to trade him because his upside is greater than Arencibia’s. And they don’t want to promote him while they are trying to contend, believing he is not ready for the majors just yet.

Does JP's relationship (on and off the field) with our pitchers/players have any impact on whether we keep him rather than D'Arnaud? Should it?
What would be the best way to handle this situation... Sept call-up for D'Arnaud, split-time between JPA and D'A next season, deal one of them at the 2013 deadline or following offseason?

Possibly. It shouldn't, though, and I dearly hope that we don't make a decision on that basis.

Call up D'Arnaud in August, split time, deal JP in the off-season if D'Arnaud looks capable.

**** your asterisk.

Re: Jays won't trade either Arencibia or d
As far as I'm concerned I want JPA and TD'A to split time on about a 50/50 basis all the way through 2014. Both young and controllable until then. At that point JPA is offered a "backup catcher *with a little extra" contract. Even add an extra year or 2. We still control Travis for a couple years at low dollars at that point and if we ever shell out the big bucks to him, JPA might be slightly overpaid, but nothing gross --- and always tradeable -- though I recommend we keep them both for the maximum time possible. But if in, 2016, one of our other young studs becomes MLB certified ready, JPA is firmly on the block. But that's 4+ years out, in my mind.

keep dreaming. will never happen. platoon 2 capable starting catchers who have a lot of potential. makes ZERO sense. you keep one and trade the other for another piece that you need. if you were to 50/50 both catchers your harming their development especially TDA. your thinking way ahead of the future without considering current implications.

This is an uber waste of talent. Having an above average (projected to be) position player on your bench at any given time is a waste. Mind as well trade one to address the weaknesses we have. It's like having Yunel split time with Hech. If Hech is equal talent wise (presumably he is, if he's getting 50% of the time) it's just a crazy waste of talent)
Also, nobody takes "backup" money long term right out of their arbitration years. Giving an extra year or two (unless both team options with buyouts) does nothing. JPA will look for a shorter term deal as a starting catcher and attempt to boost his value.
I agree that waiting might be the best option. It's not like JPA can lower his value and D'Arnaud has to start mashing in AAA before I consider handing him the job anyways. Personally I think D'Arnaud is the favorite to be the starting catcher come 2013, but a lot can happen and there is no reason to shoot yourself in the foot trying to capitalize on value.
That being said, if they want to make a ridiculous trade like Justin Upton or something for either of them I say sure (of course they won't) but otherwise I say hold.

I sort of expected the organization might have to make some tough decisions next year. Both "seem" like start material and/or potential.

One will have to go eventually. But why would Arizona want a catcher when they have Montero?

Montero is in his walk year, and figures to receive a raise on his current $5.9m salary. The Diamondbacks don't seem to be terribly interested in paying him.

I'm going to continue holding out hope that the Diamondbacks move Upton. Don't know why they would, but his name was supposedly put out there previously.

Re: Jays won't trade either Arencibia or d
I think Travis playing everyday does more for them then being a back up in the Majors. I think next season he breaks camp and they share the pitching staff allowing us to use Rajai and Gose more so in pinch running situations to steal a run or two. Though i will like to see him take on some Major league pitching to gauge how well he could do.
I think I may eventually see one of them JP if his bat picks up at 1B and Lind on the way out. We have a lot of options we just need to see who is at his best. We really struggled the last few games vs a weak Angels offense!

Re: Jays won't trade either Arencibia or d
I'll take the trade for either:
Ian Kennedy
Justin Upton
Trevor Bauer
I'm dreaming but at this point with the Jays not in any rush to "win" or even stack prospects, I'd only a trade if we're getting a "sure thing" back or upgrading.
I would combine several of our prospects to get one of these players.
Upton
Rasmus
Bautista
Damn
or
Bauer (Kennedy)
Romero
Morrow
Alvarez
Drabek

Justin Upton
Trevor Bauer

Don't think so. If they went by that logic, I think Cecil would be up.

His name was brought up before last season, and it was more of a move by the Dbacks GM to suggest that "no one was safe" as well as to see what he could theoretically get. And then Upton had an MVP calibre year. They aren't moving him. Maybe for a d'Arnaud-Gose-Marisnick-Syndergaard-Sanchez-Nicolino -Norris-Hechevarria package.
