SABR: Yankees to curb spending; Jays HAVE TO make moves.

Post#1 » by Hamyltowne » Fri May 25, 2012 12:32 am

Vince Gennaro, president of SABR, shows how the effect of the new luxury tax will be felt in New York. They will doubtless try to get under the threshold for the next 3 or four years.

Explanation of the new luxury tax and its effect on the Yankees:

This gives the Jays an opening to spend and make moves without worrying about the Yankees trying to outbid. And the opening should last a few years.

Henceforth, AA will have no excuses.

No one excited at the news?

We have our shot, now. An opening into an AL East featuring a Yankees organisation dedicated to stasis (more or less) for the next three or four years. Tampa can't keep all of their young gunners and Boston is managed by a vainglorious soapbox. This is our chance. And with AA, we'll build a sustainable winner.

I mentioned this before. This is older news. We don't have to change our plan.

I don't mean our chance to spend big in FA. I mean to make big trades, lock guys up, or let them walk, all while knowing the Yankees aren't around the corner, up to no good.

I didn't know it had already been mentioned and discussed. Anyway, it's good news, all the same.

I'm not too worried about the Orioles. Dan Duquette still has a long way to go.

I know, but I'm just saying that Yankees cutting payroll was news (I think it made the front page) months ago.

It's still good news and has never really been discussed like in it's own thread so I still see the point in making one.

Just curious: front page of what, exactly?

Website, newspaper, magazine?

Again: Not just our chances to spend big in FA. It also applies to making big trades, locking guys up, or letting them walk, all while knowing the Yankees aren't around the corner, up to no good.

The Yanks are going to be in tough to try and curb payroll imo. Rivera may look for a new contract, Jete's has that ridiculous one. You got Tex and A-rod and CC signed to massive contracts. Cano I believe is due in the not to distant future... If they want to keep there team intact, there going to be in tough to keep it under that 189 imo. And the tears are shedding believe me.

AA may want to do a lot of things, but Rogers still has to pony up

AA has said all he has to do is ask for the money. He doesn't wanna blow his chance because if he pulls a Ricciardi then he might not get enother one.

Agreed.

A few things to remember:
- AA was never denied money by Rogers
- Rogers has pursued big name FA in the past (AA said no)
- Last offseason solid FA's took less money and year to go elsewhere

We have an owner willing to spend and has a history of letting us spend (Wells contract was approved by Rogers), it's just a question on when.

Spending on a premier FA is a guaranteed lose over the life of the contract, but provides a few years of solid production (not too far away from career numbers, and remember players decline close to FA years). The moral of the story is a "good" prospect who becomes a FA may not become an FA until age 30. D'Arnaud (if called up next year) will be one of those FA. That is around when players start to decline fast. Before that decline in manageable.

It's important not to forget that if you make a huge splash you only got a very short window to "contend" so it is useless to add a crippling contract that extends beyond 5 years unless you are already a playoff team. Texas's GM knows this. AA knows this.

^ Definitely agree.

And to go back to the OP, the Yankees are already paying for their mistakes: Mark Teixeira is having a poor season. A-Rod, too, if he can't stay healthy (and, of course, he won't).
