Okay, the standings won't stay this way so this is a pointless exercise so if you TL;DR that's probably a good idea.
But if you check out the SOS with the current set-up for this year, the ALE teams are just getting gutting in comparison, both by inter-division and the fact interleague is NLE, the obviously 2nd best division in baseball. Barring the fact that the Yankees have had it relatively easy so far (and holy crap do they pay for it going forward) the ALC and ALW teams in contention (only looked at the top 9 in the AL in depth) are about 50/50 for games played against >.500 and <.500 teams (anywhere from 27/31 to 30/27) while the ALE (again NYY is closer to the ALC and ALW at 31/23, but will catch up by year's end) is 38/18 to 45/11. BAL, making their early success even more impressive, has played over 80% of its games against .500 or better (as of today) competition.
By year's end LAA, CLE, CHW, and TEX will play anywhere from 80-87 games against good teams (keep in mind this includes 9 of 14 teams in the ALE so half isn't really that impressive), while the ALE ranges from 117 to 124 (this BAL being good thing is really making it mental). The Yankees, who've had it easy by ALE standards so far, have 87 games against .500 or better teams remaining to just 21 against crappy teams (BTW, my cutoff was actually PHI instead of .500 'cause I just couldn't call them a bad team).
If the relative strengths hold up, then the ALE plays 35-45 more games against plus .500 teams than their WC competitors in other divisions. If the difference between the playoffs and not is somewhere between going 6-4 every 10 instead of 5-5, how unfair is the competition if 5 teams play >.500 teams 7 out of every 10 and 9 teams play those teams 5 out of 10?
All that being said, I actually like unbalanced 'cause I don't want to see Minny or Oakland 12 times against the Jays, but I'm okay lessening it just a tad and certainly not for increasing it. And while I'm okay with it, I'm certainly aware it isn't what could, by any stretch of the imagination, be called fair and a league that thinks it should increase that unfairness has its head so far up its own ass, it could only be run by... oh right Bud Selig, so there's that.
