Buster Olney said Jays could land Carlos Quentin

Post#1 » by Leolovinliberal » Thu Jun 7, 2012 1:50 am

He was on ESPN radio today and named the Jays, Rays and Reds as the most likely teams to land him.

why not? Quentin would be pretty damn perfect at DH with EE at 1B full time, he's a very valuable baseball player as long as you don't let him put on a Glove

Can't we put him at LF, and leave EE as a 1B/DH

absolutely not, Quentin is horrific in the outfield, one of the worst defensive outfielders in MLB history actually.

He's a Rental, that's why.

that's all the more reason to pursue him, you can tack on an extra couple of wins in a season where you have a shot at 3 playoff spots without losing any good prospects or making a huge financial commitment. San Diego got him for peanuts in the offseason and they were getting him for a year, he should come pretty cheap at the trade deadline.

That's great for this season, but then every year after that... yeah.

Ah, I see. You think we're likely to make the postseason with Quentin?

With a bat like him and an upgrade in the rotation yeah i do think the Jays have a realistic shot at 3 playoff spots. If you can do it without making huge financial commitments or burning your good prospects, there's absolutely no reason not to give yourself a shot in a year like this.

you're hilariously wrong, just because you can't pencil in a guy in the lineup for the next 5 years doesn't mean you don't go after him.

1. It's unlikely we make the Postseason this year.

2. Nothing is cheap at the deadline. He will be in demand and the price will go up. San Diego traded for him with the intention of flipping him at this year's deadline.

Also, you have to define 'cheap.'

This is really just fodder for their fantasy show. Of course the Jays could land him and yes he'd fit in nicely in our lineup to protect Joey Bats. The real question is can he stay healthy? The Rogers Centre isn't the best fit for him considering the kind of injuries he's had (knee, ankle).

As a rental if the Jays are in it, sure, but I trust him to stay healthy as much as I trust those door to door guys that claim they work for Enbridge and say I'm eligible for a new water tank.

Only if there's also a plan to bring in a 1-3 SP. AND someone to replace Hutch for August/September.

Uh, Deck and/or Cooper?

I assume he'd be DHing exclusively.

+1

That's the joke, people don't even know what we would have to give up. I'd at least like to know the price before saying no. Obviously, all of our top drawer prospects are out of the question, but a low second tier prospect who has only a slim chance of making our roster long term? You at least have to think a little harder about it. Maybe the Padres have scouted our retreads like Lind. We could pay a majority of Lind's salary.

It would be high. Deadline prices are notoriously high. Carlos Beltran cost Zach Wheeler (who was ranked 55th best prospect in the league before a great start to 2011) so I could see it being a similar package as Carlos is much younger. It would likely be Gose+
