The Astros and Blue Jays have completed a ten-player trade, the teams announced. The Astros obtain seven players from Toronto: Major Leaguers Francisco Cordero and Ben Francisco, minor leaguers Joe Musgrove, Asher Wojciechowski, David Rollins and Carlos Perez, and a player to be named. The Astros send Brandon Lyon, J.A. Happ and David Carpenter to Toronto in the trade.

Ha, we actually pawned Coco off... Lyon isn't all that great, but Happ could be a good addition if he recovers his Philly form. We'll see on that.

Happ looks like another classic AA buy-low purchase.

I can get behind any deal that rids us of Coco and Ben Francisco.

Gave up two good prospects, but certainly not our best, for some veteran pitching. Doesn't sound like AA is running up the white flag.

Some good things being said about Carpenter.

Jerry Crasnick ‏@jcrasnick
David Carpenter has command issues, but swing and miss stuff. 252 strikeouts in 241 professional IP. #bluejays #astros

Jerry Crasnick ‏@jcrasnick
Some scouts thinks David Carpenter, acquired by #BlueJays in 10-player trade, has closer potential. "Quality arm,'' says one scout.

‏@Ken_Rosenthal
Carpenter may be key to 10-player deal for #BlueJays. Late-inning potential, 5 more yrs. of control. Lyon potential FA. Happ 2 more yrs arb.

Happ isn't very good, but we gave up nothing pretty much.

True, but we could have simply shown the door.

Hmm, I'm torn on losing out on guys like Perez/Wojciechowski, mostly because I don't think Happ's actually all that good. Struggled in a crummy division and now he's pitching in the ALE? meh

and lol, LAST thing this team needs is another pitcher with command issues.

He's a different player from last year who's been hampered by a bit of bad luck. He's throwing his Curveball a bit more, upped his Changeup by a few ticks, and induced more grounders (though a bit unsustainable). His HR/FB has shot up despite the increase in grounders and his BABIP is 30 points higher than his career mark. He's also seen an increase in K% and decrease in BB%.

He might be able to stick as a back end rotation guy?

This feels like a trade designed to keep up appearances that the Jays are still trying to win a wildcard, even if that's unlikely. With attendance up, I suspect AA would rather finish around .500 than let things slide into the tank.

And with the surgeries for Santos, Drabek and Perez, this buys a little insurance for the start of next season.

I'm not sure how I feel about this trade honestly. Perez, Musgrove, Woj are outside of our Top 10; but all three have ability (especially Perez and Musgrove). What exactly did we receive? A 4/5 starter and a decent reliever who's a FA at the end of the season. Carpenter seems to have some promise but he's your typical good stuff, erratic command/control reliever.

Its impossibly to evaluate this trade immediately; but we really didn't "steal" anything away here.

Wow Musgrove, Asher, and Perez.

How many wins do we add just be subtracting CoCo?

J.A Happ has a nice K/9 IP but the HR/9 scares me ( i noticed that Minute Maid is about on par this year as far as park factor HR) and Lyon should be a solid addition to the pen. I don't know much about Carpenter.

Not a big Happ fan myself. Feels like we gave up a lot of prospects for an average pitcher at best.

I think this is ultimately a wash. We just shuffled some pieces around but allows us to get through the season with our pitching injuries. The fact that CoCo is gone means we won the trade in my book.
