Indeed great read, interesting to see how things unfolded in the timeline.

It also amazes me that Jeff Mathis was the guy that almost didn't make this trade happen. To me, he is the not even the top 10 players in this 12 player trade.

Amazing read. Still have a number of questions though:

1) Does this mean Alvarez was added instead of Syndegaard?
2) If Marlins wanted Hech from the beginning, why didn't they include Reyes from the beginning

I got the sense that rejected it because AA just signed him to an extension. Trading him right after he did that, kind of goes against his M.O.

Yea, probably AA felt some sort of loyalty to keep a player that he just extended, but it's not like other GMs wouldn't have traded recently extended players (iirc sergio santos got extended by wsox and then traded to jays)

Yes, but that's not the point. Ever since AA was hired, his M.O. was to change the culture of the Toronto Blue Jays brand. Such things like being loyal to a John Buck to allow him to play the whole year is another example of this. Perhaps the same promise was made to Omar Vizquel as well. I don't know what he did to convince himself, whether it was to call Mathis himself before the trade was final or perhaps he realized no promises were ever made to Mathis.

It's interesting that this deal was on the table last summer but we turned it down.

Mon. July 23, Arlington, Tex.

What does a Marlins scout say to the Jays scout, while watching the Boston Red Sox play the Texas Rangers?

"I hear our teams are talking," they both said.

The Jays wanted right-hander Johnson.

The Marlins requested Hechavarria and Nicolino.

Also, Hech's value appears to be sky-high (at least higher than I thought)

"I like the pieces the Marlins got," said a scout. "Alvarez is young, he might figure it out, it's a beautiful arm. Hechavarria is going to be an all-star for years.

I love reading behind the scenes articles like this.

So AA made all three of the Lansing 3, Sanchez/Syndergaard/Nicolini available.......... and Miami picked the one with the lowest ceiling and lower ranked prospect :-?

and here i was thinking AA made a shrewd move. Turns out Miami liked him best anyway..... i remember last year though AA turned down Gio Gonzalez cause A's wanted Syndergaard in the package.

not to say Nocolini doesn't have ace potential, cause he does.... but he's the guy as a JAYS fan i would have rather seen traded anyway.

The idea here is AA strives NOT to be like many other GM's. He wants to be a man of his word both to players and agents. That generally gives you a better reputation and makes you a man of your word, both of those are very important in the long run.

Pretty much, he didnt want to pull a Loria on Mathis.

Mathis is also arguably a better player than Buck when you include defense and pitch framing. There was a reason he extended him for two years as a backup, he liked him.

i really liked mathis a lot for our solidified 35-45 game back-up. just a terrific guy to have on your team by all accounts...team first guy that was all about winning...also loved his clutch jack in oakland that tied up a game we all thought was over and the GW put-out of elliot johnson where he got rocked but held on and did a subtle fist pump...so for me that contributes to having a bit of a soft spot for em, and losing him kinda sucked more than most if not all the other players exported. which does sound crazy because it's only jeff mathis and considering the impact talent we received, but still...would have rather not included him obviously...i'd have rather tried to send lind packing + another 2nd tier prospect than mathis.

read this yesterday and agreed that's it's a great read and why elliot is a HOF writer.

Great read..........isnt that what it is all about ? to bad some one wouldnt write a book on the same kind of stuff on some other big trades or even more intresting on trades that didnt happen because of stuff like the Mathis part. That is pretty intresting stuff for sports nuts to read on the back room dealings and the thoughts of the GMs and scouting staffs when stuff like this goes on.
