OT: TB trades Shields, Davis for Wil Myers + other prospects

Post#1 » by dagger » Mon Dec 10, 2012 3:51 am

Ken Rosenthal ‏@Ken_Rosenthal
Source: #Rays will send James Shields and Wade Davis to #Royals for Wil Myers and other prospects.

Jon Morosi ‏@jonmorosi
BREAKING: James Shields has been traded to #Royals, source confirms. @TBTimes_Rays first to report trade was in works.

For those who don't know Myers
Myers is an outfielder who will be 22 years old next season, and he is one of the most highly regarded prospects in baseball. The former third-round draft pick exploded in 2012, hitting a combined .314 with 37 home runs and 109 RBI between the Royals' Double-A and Triple-A affiliates. Any number of teams would love to add his projectable bat to their lineup.

Wow. That's the type of trade the Royals needed to make though.

What's the prognosis on Myers? Are we talking another Stanton/Heyward right out of the gate?

@jcrasnick

Hearing that Shields, Davis and Myers aren't only names in trade. It's bigger than that, source said. #rays #royals

Top PCL prospect according to BaseballAmerica. (d'Arnaud rated #2)

One interesting issue will be the signability of Shields in two years, according to one website. KC might be hardpressed to keep him and might have preferred a player with a longer control period. But they needed a quality starter.

Steve Berthiaume ‏@BertDbacks
James Shields making $9 million for 2013 & $12 million for 2014, both club options. Wade Davis signed thru '14 plus options thru 2017.

This is huge, KC fans don't seem excited about giving up Wil Myers the thought is he is going to be a impact player from the get go.

This is great news for Jays fans btw.

edit: provided no impact players like Hosmer or Butler are headed to Tampa.

Myers plus lesser prospects.

In Tampa Bay, there were suggestions Rays had to trade Shields to have a hope of re-signing David Price.

No its not. The Rays got a lot of pitching left with Price, Hellickson and Moore. They are going to have a really improved line up (which was their problem last year) with Yunel and Myers (when ever he gets called up)

KC has plenty of batters in their lineup, they desperately need pitchers. good trade for them.

Was thinking the same thing. Davis killed us last year and Shields wasn't easy on us either.

It's pretty pathetic that a team has to make moves like this to dump salary to have a chance to compete especially when the organization is run so well. Again, it is to our benefit but it is incredible that Tampa has never been linked to a relocation plan or smartly moving into Tampa itself as opposed to St. Petersburg

This gives TB another good potential bat in the future, but next year they're not going to be as good. Shields is a stud and Davis is really solid.

Tampa still has a solid rotation with Price, Hellickson, Moore, Cobb. And now they've added one of the best prospects in baseball, who is also major league ready. I'm not sure if this is good news for the Jays. I'm happy we won't see Shields that often, but if Myers is the next Trout...

Wow the Royals are run by idiots.

So Wil Myers is somehow going to destroy us from Durham?

Wil Myers is as much a sure thing as any prospect in baseball, but ultimately still a prospect. Tampa just lost two big arms AND Upton who I am not a big fan of, but that still hurts them. Tampa has definitely regressed this off season, not sure how you can disagree with that.

Marc Topkin ‏@TBTimes_Rays
Huge #Rays trade is Shields AND Davis (and PTBNL) to #Royals for OF Myers, RHP Odorizzi, LHP Montgomery, 3B Leonard

Think this shifts it to a solid, if not huge win for the Rays.

Tampa's future gets much brighter but as said prior they are weaker at the current moment which bodes well for the Jays.

Odorizzi is #11 on BaseballAmerica's list of top 20 PCL prospects.
