Not sure how Wilner doing colour would be a positive. Besides, it's more likely that somebody like Hayhurst replaces Ashby.

Aside from the likes of Dan Shulman and Jim Hughson ,usually the best announcers come from the States. It was always a surprise they got Ashby in the first place. Hope they don't cheap out and go an "Eric Smith" route. Or a baseball guy not cut out for it like Warren Sawkiw.

it seems you talk a lot about stuff you don't know much of. yes ashby is colour, but he does play-by-play when howardth takes breaks during games. wilner has taken ashby's place already this year.

Ashby is a smart guy, he's just really annoying in the way he talks. The inflection in his voice is so grating.

This really sucks. But his family lives in Houston, so I can see why he wants to go there. I see Hayhurst getting the job, or maybe Sam Cosentino.

I like Dirk however. Hate to see Ashby go - great radio on a summer afternoon/evening.

Wilner is terrible on opinion shows so moving him to the radio where he just reports the facts would be good. Ashby is annoying anyway to me, so this would be a good situation.

Jerry and Ashby make for a great combination. The both call a great game. Houston is where his home is, but he also has to consider whether he wants to broadcast for a perennial loser vs. a team that has an excellent chance to go into the playoffs this year. And even if he were to choose Houston, he'd still be away half the time in any case.

I for one hope he stays.

Yeah, I prefer Ashby over anyone that the JAYS have on both TV and radio! Unlike everyone else, he's not afraid to criticize a player if he makes a dumb play. I find him refreshing, especially after watching a full season of the Raptors and the moron company men who are up everyone ASS no matter what! Ashby doesn't give a crap what anyone thinks, and seems very smart.

It would suck balls to see him leave to Houston

Would be very disappointed if he left... his voice is so familiar and so connected to the Blue Jays and summertime.

Seriously though. Meh. Ashby IMO anyways, isn't really an established voice where it's horrible to lose him. Don't get me wrong, he's decent, but replaceable. Now if we replace him with a Wilner, that would be awful, horrific infact. I think whoever comes in needs to have some sort of inside scoop in the league... I.E Zaun or Hayhurst. I don't love either of those guys, but they at least can provide some insight.

Personally, I'd move Tabby from TV into the radio booth, as I feel he fits better there. Get rid of Buck, obviously, and then plug in Jaime and maybe a Zaun and a Mulliniks. Do a 3 man booth. Rance is awkward and has a bad voice, but his insight is just so damn impressive, I can put up with all his other shortcomings...

1) You think Tabby would be a good fit on radio where Jerry has alternated play-by-play with his on-air partners forever? Tabby doing PBP? Not to mentioin just agreeing with everything anyone says and telling us the obvious like it's news?

(Tabby is no better than Sawkiw in my mind. Boring, kinda dense, and uninteresting).

2) You don't think Buck would bring something to the TV colour job? That's his niche - an "inside knowledge" guy, as you say you want, it's just too bad he doesn't know where he belongs.

If Ashby goes, my hope (and really, it's a bare-minimum expectation) would be for:

Radio:

Jerry and NEW GUY

TV:

NEW GUY (PBP) and Buck (Colour)


1 thing I will agree with you on (and you and I may be the only people on the board to believe this) --- Jaime Campbell got a bad rap. He was quite acceptable as our PBP guy. Quite knowledgeable and very professional. He tried to do it right. His ship was sunk when he was saddled with a rotating poo-poo platter of colour guys including Rance/Tabby/and Fletcher. I'd accept Jamie and Buck on the TV side if they can't find a better play-by-play guy.

If you think moving Wilner to the booth is a good idea to do both colour and PBP (though especially colour), it seems we could say the same about you.

Wilner is horrible and the sooner he is no longer affiliated with the Blue Jays, the better.
I used to listen to him occasionally on the Fan 590 (before and after games) but his tone and agenda shifted once he got "into trouble". Upon his return I cannot stand listening to his mix of yes-man and condescension

Honestly, I forgot that Jerry and Alan rotate PBP... If Tabby were to go to the Radio side, I would want him to be solely and only Color. He doesn't offer much insight for sure, but he's polished, and smooth and has a nice voice and a clean delivery. All things considered I'd take him. But like mentioned, only if it was for a full-time color position.

Buck I could live with on Color. He's brutal on PBP because he does PBP and Color. I can live with him there, but as is likely well known, I am not a Buck fan in the slightest, so given the option, I'd prefer him gone outright.

Jaime did get a bad rap. He knew his role and did his job well. He understood enough of baseball to be competent in PBP, and as a broadcaster, he had a terrific understanding of his role and delivery and things of that ilk. With the right partner (somebody with good inside knowledge) I think they'd make a fine pair. Though Rance looks weird, and has an awful, grating voice, I always found his insight to be terrific. The guy followed along with every pitch and every at bat.

I like Ashby.

Worst news of this thread was the doug smith of the blue jays promoted to colour. Wilner is a total moron.
