Honestly, I think Romero should be the opening day starter. GIve him the start as a "we still believe in you, you are our guy" statement.

I just posted something along the same line in a different post... hoping Ricky would come back and challenge for the number 1 spot inthe spring. But maybe staying in the 5 spot would do him good he wouldnt be going up against the opposings teams top dogs as much giving him a bit of confidense in himself. All inall it is a good problem to have wondering where we will put all these starters

I think the problem with Ricky was he let the "Ace" thing go to his head. He was never good enough to be a real Ace. At best he was a 2-3 in a solid rotation.

He was injured. He had surgery this offseason.

I think Romero is totally fine now not being the "ace". He knows the type of players we got, his ego's not THAT big.

I think Romero will bounce back. In fact, I'm a little more concerned about how Bautista's wrist will be going forward.

Any update on Jose's rehab post-surgery?

I think he felt like he was 'the guy' last season, and I think he felt he needed to be 'the guy' last season. The pressure got to him and he lost, imo. But he also had injury problems last season. Im expecting normal Ricky Ro next year.

I heard an interview with Jose last night and he basically said he is ready to go and wishes the season was starting tomorrow (today). He said he's pumped and considers anything but a World Series this upcoming year as a failure. He said the organization made the moves to give them a great chance but it's now up to the players to perform on the field and justify the moves/lineup. He sounded really excited.

omg i cant beleive the first post saying he should be the opening day starter. LOL hahahaahahaha
other than that, as the 5th starter with less presure i can see him coming back to form, last year if he through a bad pitch it would ruin him for the game

Back on topic (for me), I firmly believe last year was a combination of shaky confidence, feeling the pressure of the entire pitching staff (being "the ace") and injury (not sure how much it played a factor, but it was obviously an issue). Weeks ago I remember hearing him say a comment (paraphasing) "I'll do whatever it takes to help this club win. If it means I'm the 5th starter or they want me coming out of the pen, I'll do as I'm told to the best of my abilities. I just want to be part of this organization and for us to win".

Obviously it's a cut-throat business (sports in general) of what-have-you-done-for-me-lately views. Romero is a very upbeat positive guy who wears his heart on his sleeve. Hopefully, with less pressure and a successful surgery/rehab and some tempered emotions, he can bounce back. I absolutely love his enthusiasm, however,

Use of cutter jumped big time with him. Maybe he wasn't ready with it and forced it to become part of his repertoire. He could go back to just 4 seamer and 2 seamer but if cutter becomes a featured pitch for him that he can locate successfully, I think Romero can become an ace (and you take the struggles of last year as part of the process).

I'm sure all professional athletes get these kind of tweets. Even good players like Kobe and Lebron have haters. If Ricky lets it affect him, then he's not very strong mentally.

The thing I like about Ricky is he bleeds blue and white. The guy reps the city and team well and flat out loves being a Blue Jay. He's homegrown talent and we need guys like this on our team.
He will get his stuff back. His previous 3 years really indicate the type of player he is.

He's got a great changeup

If the Jays had a 1 game playoff tomorrow who would you start? That's your number one starter. I don't think Romero would be it.

Nope.

I don't see any justifiable reason to put him #1.

Not only was he far worse than every other pitcher on this team last year, but even his best year is worse than most of the other players best years. Johnson, and Dickey are way better at their peaks, and were way better last year. Buehrle is dependable every single year. Morrow was far better last year than Romero, and has much better stuff.

I really can't think of a reason to put him anywhere but at the bottom of the order. It may even be good for him to have no preasure when coming back from injury/a horrible year.

On one hand we want to believe he won't feel as much pressure. On the other hand, he's probably going to feel the pressure of being able to stay in the rotation. 5th guy is first to get booted out.
