AA Assured Arencibia He Wouldn't Be Dealt

Post#1 » by number15 » Mon Dec 24, 2012 7:31 pm

J.P. Arencibia received assurance earlier this offseason that he is not only the starter of the present, but that the Blue Jays wouldn't trade him.

Toronto traded catching prospect Travis d'Arnaud to the Mets in the R.A. Dickey trade last week, further solidifying Arencibia's role.

"As a player, it just shows the class of people that you're working with," Arencibia said of his talk with Anthopoulos. "They've been nothing but honest with me. Throughout the whole thing, he was able to calm me as far as just tell me, 'Hey, this is what it is. We believe in you and you're our guy.'

"Not only does that make me feel good, but it makes you want to go out and work harder, go the extra mile and go the extra distance for this organization. If they tell me I need to run through a wall, I'm going to try and run through that wall."

I see what the article says but I was under the impression that AA quickly responded to this saying he never promised JPA anything. AA had told JPA that he would be given the starting gig and Buck would be his backup, but never made promises about being untradeable. As it turns out, Buck ends up being dealt. But I could be wrong and I'm too lazy to find the relevant quotes from AA. I don't believe that of all people, JPA would be untouchable for AA given we did have d'Arnaud ready and waiting in AAA.

typical misleading wiretap headline. the real article is titled "Trade further assurance of J.P.'s place in Toronto" which included this AA quote which states the complete opposite of AA "assuring" jp anything;

"I did call J.P. at the Winter Meetings, not to assure him that he would never get traded. I told him that I'll never promise or guarantee you that you can't be traded. If it's the right deal for the organization, ultimately that's my responsibility to the ballclub. What I can tell you about what's currently going on, I wouldn't overly concern yourself right now as we sit here today."

jp was probably pissing and sh*tting his pants while repeatedly refreshing his twitter feed when the dickey rumours first began to surface. no chance in hell this guy would be "untouchable". delusions of grandeur if he actually thought that.

clean it up realgm wiretap editors.

I was also surprised when I glanced at the headline thinking maybe AA knew something about D'Arnaud that we didn't, then I read the actual article, horrible proofreading by RealGM editors as usual.

He was! I seem to remember other Blue Jays joking to him about him angsting over the trade rumors on his twitter feed.

No, AA did no such thing. Change your headline, it's inaccurate. And so is the moron wiretap nonsense.

AA was on PTS and was flat out asked if he assured JPA that he wouldn't be traded, and he answered "I would never do that".

And yes, they did in fact offer JPA and Gose.

Regardless of the discussions he had with AA, isn't it amazing to hear a player talk about this organization in such a way? First, Vernon then Doc, then Buck, it's absolutely great. I've got lots of love for JP, and AA making this a first class organization makes players around the league definitely take notice. Not only are we talented but we did it the right way.....exciting times in Toronto.

This was told to him at the winter meetings, by that time, the Mets made it clear they wanted at least TDA for Dickey.
