OT: Braves trade for J. Upton
It looks like the Upton brothers will be reuniting in Atlanta in a package which at first glance doesn't appear to be too pricey for the Braves...

Thats a turrible trade... for dbacks. Awesome if your are braves fan. Upton/Upton/Heyward OF .
Its funny 2 years ago, AZ was asking for Snider, Drabek + for Upton and many jays fans would have been rioting if AA had given up just snider and drabek, let alone additions.

That's the thing with prospects, one second they can fetch you an established major league star, the next year they can be completely worthless

Funny you say that when Upton, Heyward and Upton were all big name prospects just years ago.

Not denying that, but completely ignoring the fact that a portion do pan out is ridiculous.

He never denied that a lot of prospects do pan out. He made a comment on prospects in general, that they don't always work out, even so called "can't miss" prospects . He didn't say they never work out.

He gave two outcomes;
a) Fetch you established major league star (insinuated via trade)
b) Completely worthless

We've been interested in Upton for awhile wonder why Arizona have been shopping him for
so long and so hard. Not a fan of the package they settled on would have been nice to have
him but glad he stays in the NL.

Atlanta-Toronto World Series?
How awesome would it be to see these two teams meet up again.

No, he's saying how a prospect can fall off the map. They seem like can't miss prospects chalk full of potential (Snider and Drabek), but a couple years later, they may fail to live up to their potential (Snider and Drabek) and not become the stars you thought they would be.
It was not an either or comparison. It was a comment about how players do not always live up to their potential. There was no separation of being awesome or terrible, and that's it.
We all know a star prospect can become a star player, a solid player, an average player, a utility man, or a career minor leaguer. Projections are simply projections, not guarantee. His comment was in hindsight, dealing Snider+Drabek would've been a great deal for us, now that we can see that they didn't live up to the potential we thought they had. But a couple years ago we were hoping they would be stars, so we didn't do it.

Re: OT: Braves trade for J. Upton
I actually meant to say that both sides (Snider+Drabek as well as Upton) lost value over the last 2 years, considering how little Upton fetched.
While we'd be ecstatic if such a deal came along again (hindsight and all), Upton isn't the superstar that everybody though he would be (although I'm not ruling out the possibility since he is still 25).

Only thing that should worrry atlanta is that they sure will strikeout a lot in the OF. Both Uptons and Heyward are known to strike out.

You know who also doesn't pan out sometimes? "Proven" veterans. Doesn't prove much of a point to say that can't-miss prospects flop once in a while. There are exactly zero groups of players that always pan out.
