There's always going to be that next guy who is the highest paid pitcher/player ever. It's called inflation.
Kershaw could break 30mill/per though, especially with the Dodgers ownership.

That's a lot of coin for one player.

Horrid. It's a contract based on legacy, and those days are already running short. jmho

They should have traded him. Help is needed at multiple positions and they have no hope at contending as currently constructed

Josh Johnson will sign for 75M/5 years

Yeah it seems highly doubtful that he will earn that contract. Already losing lots of velocity, and tons of innings on that arm. 7 years is never a good thing. Letting him play out his final 2 seasons would have been wiser IMO, and then when he goes all Lincecum in 2013 or 2014 they can sign him for much less than $27M/yr. If he maintains his ability then trade him mid-way through 2014. Just not a whole lot of upside with this route.

We see pitcher after pitcher sign for "record" amounts, and we continue to refuse that the price for front of the rotation starters has risen dramatically. What happens when Verlander hits FA? Is he going to sign for less? Likely not, this is the market we live in.
It's time for AA to pony up and sign Johnson before he puts up any sort of a season with a hint that he could return to form, otherwise you better enjoy the extra pick in the 1st round because he's good as gone.

I'd rather not and just sign Halladay next offseason. AA isn't going to pay market value for JJ (especially if this is market value).

JJ has serious shoulder concerns. Bad, bad, bad idea to make a long term offer right now, unless it's well below market value and/or for 3/4 years. I have absolutely no issue with getting one season out of him and then getting a draft pick.

He could easily have the 2nd best 2013 season on the staff. I wouldn't want to lose that.

That's where you have to debate risk vs reward. Same for the player. May wind up with a Lind/Wells-type deal (albatross) or a Bautista-type deal (huge savings). JJ could return to his ace-like ability. Or not.
With the huge backloaded contracts, I expect AA to wait it out (maybe do a mid-season deal like EE). A 1st rounder is better than nothing, at least.

I'd rather take a chance on a pitcher that doesn't have shoulder problems causing a huge drop in velocity, regardless of where he ends of ranking amongst Jays starters in 2013. He (or his agent) may feel pressured into accepting considerably less than market value right now rather than risk falling apart and/or getting injured in 2013, but other than that I'd just let him walk if he wants to be paid market value a year ahead of free agency.

ROY is not all that anymore, Johnson may not warrant long term - AA has many better options

Speaking of health, the King Felix extension may be on hold - concern over his elbow?
