Lawrie leaves game early due to injury

Brett Lawrie left Wednesday's exhibition game for Canada after three innings after he felt a minor twinge in his side.
Canada manager Ernie Whitt said Lawrie will be reevaluated on Thursday, but he didn't rule out the possibility that he could miss Friday's opener against Italy. "We’ll see how he feels (Thursday)," said Whitt. "It’s a wait and see right now." For what it's worth, Lawrie dealt with an oblique injury last season.

Urgh, I've been saying for a while now that Lawrie will always have injury problems due to the way he plays. It happened two years ago with his broken hand, then with his broken finger to end the season. Last year it was the hip. Lets just hope we can get 130+ regular season games out of him and the playoffs too. I'd be thrilled.

He'll have to bring down the intensity if he has any hopes of getting through a season healthy. I think he'll learn to do so with more time and experience.

Depending on what his issue is, it might be best now if they hold him out of the WBC games this weekend, though. Wouldn't want to risk further aggravating anything.

Guessing you wouldn't say the same thing if he played for the Yankees.

If I was a Yankee fan I would, but hear what you are saying - I excuse Russell as he gave a valid reason imo.

Meh, I would. I wouldn't blame any team for taking a player out if they are even slightly worried about any sort of injury.

Oblique Strain...out a few weeks (minimum), says Gregor Chisholm.

They've got time. I'd say hold him out all the way until the start of the season. Lessens the risk of aggravation or even another injury.

in fairness, the broken hand came from being hit by a pitch in a minor league game just before he was supposed to be called up to toronto. intensity levels won't change that.

the broken finger came from fielding practice. his hand closed in on his glove before the ball got there. a freak injury intensity won't change that either.

i don't know what kapono means with the hip injury but lawrie did mess up his rib and leg falling into the camera deck in new york.

other than that, he was held out for about a month with an oblique injury last year. his "strain" is apparently his left oblique which would signify a recurring injury. reports say he'll miss the first round, miss a few weeks, blah blah blah.

The first domino in our injury plagued, disappointing season has fallen. The sky is falling. Next up, Joey Bats tendon sheath flare up.

This isn't the Colangelo-run Raptors. Not everything ends in complete failure.

:D I'm still traumatized by last season's injury woes. The best part about the Jays is that even without Lawrie, this team is loaded. Injuries are inevitable, but this team has very solid depth to weather the storm.

Well for any extended Lawrie injury, I sure hope that Bonifacio can handle the rigors of throwing from second base, 'cause I do not want to watch Mark DeRosa play every day.

He doesn't need to tone down his intensity he just needs to take care of his body better and do proper rehab, strengthening and stretching.

Nice to see that your Colangelo-bashing posts have spilled over to the Jays forum.

Impossible for there to be enough of that. If I need an analogy for a horribly-run, directionless franchise run by a bad GM, Colangelo's Raptors are the go-to-team for that.

DeRosa has to go if he can't fill in for Lawrie for a short time.

Wouldn't we play Izturis at 3b if Lawrie is hurt and have Boneface at 2nd base?
