Jonah Keri: The Voice of Reason - Don't Panic

So why is it too soon to push the panic button in Toronto? Let's start with this: If we're going to freak out over Dickey, we have to do the same with Stephen Strasburg, David Price, Matt Cain, and Cole Hamels, all of whom got roughed up on a terrible day for aces. There's also precedent for this kind of slow start to a season for Dickey, even if we only start counting from his successful years. In fact, in his third start last season, he posted a line very similar to Sunday's, allowing eight runs in 4⅓ innings against the Braves. In his next 11 starts, he went 9-0 with a 1.21 ERA. Are you concerned that, based on one start, the AL East might be Dickey's undoing? If we're going to obsess over such small samples, we can highlight Dickey's two straight one-hitters (with 25 combined strikeouts) against AL East opponents last June. Expanding it to Dickey's rotation mates, should we really draw conclusions based on a Red Sox series in which Boston smacked Dickey and Josh Johnson, but got whitewashed by, of all people, J.A. Happ?
We simply don't have anywhere near enough evidence to suggest Dickey's in trouble. Meanwhile, unlike the next two teams featured, the rest of Toronto's roster is in good shape. Brett Lawrie looks set to start a rehab assignment soon, and just about every other significant player on the roster is healthy. If you believe the Jays were good enough to deserve their lofty winter projections, nothing has happened that should make you change your mind.

It's one week in a six-month season...

I remember Adam Lind the past few seasons would have some good weeks early in the season and then some people would say "Maybe this is his season!" and then he'd appropriately regress back to bad ol' Lind by June. And Bautista started last season horribly but eventually turned it around and was on pace for 40 HRs or so before he went down.
Funny thing about impressions: I remember one season a few years ago I very casually followed the Jays mostly by highlights and results every night. And I had this weird impression that Lyle Overbay was having an awesome season just because he seemed to hit a homer every time I caught up with the Jays, and how cool his pose looked when the ball was actually flying off his bat. Of course, he was never as good as that impression but that's how false it is when you don't pay attention to the fact that it's a 162 game season.

at yesterday's game, a few idiots near me (sec 230, if that was you) started booing and heckling. someone called Reyes a bum. he also yelled "Dickey, you suck!"
This is why Toronto shouldn't be allowed anything nice. we don't know what to do with it when we have it and then cry when it is taken away from us.
can't have an NFL attitude when attempting to be a MLB fan. outliers vanish (for the most part) during a 162 game season. going 2-4 in the first 6 is not great, but the sky is far from falling.

Toronto fans are the worst...
That cross section of callers wasn't as bad as I was expecting. Not much different than the cross-section of idiots that have filtered onto this forum the past few days.

It has been like that for the last 10 years. I haven't listened to jaystalk in a while but I understand why Wilner has become an ****. All those calls from d'bags over the years have taken their toll. People here need to dial down their Wilner hate.

I was all set to watch and chat in the game-day thread, but I was smart enough to walk away from this forum - unfortunately not from the game - after the Middlebrooks HR 'cause I want no part of the sky is falling - I told you it would crowd. They may even be right, but they'll have to wait another 60 days before I'm willing to listen to their argument.
Like the thread currently two spots below this one. I will not open that thread, 'cause I think I'll get banned if I do.

I don't know why, but I'm surprised that there has been a decent amount of posters on this forum that have been acting completely irrationally. i kind of thought this place would show some decent perspective, because it's just so God Damn ridiculous to get worried this early in the season. I didn't think expecting fans that follow the game enough to post on a baseball forum to understand that 6 games into a 162 game season means jack was asking too much.
I mean we have been missing Bautista, and Lawrie for a big chunk of the games played so far. Dickey, and Buhrle are not 8.44 ERA, and 10.5 ERA pitchers. We're not going to keep having awful defense once Lawrie is at 3rd, and Izuris is at 2nd. Lind , EE, and Cabrera are not going to keep hitting .229ops, .440ops, and .505ops. How is this not super obvious? And, I mean we are a whopping 2 games under 0.500 with 156 games to play, lol.
I just don't understand how anyone that has ever even followed baseball in the least could we worried at this stage.

Your post, in a Proustian flood, conjurs memories of days long since forgotten. A lost time when Dave Chapelle was relevant and funny and the battle cry upon every Raps fans' lips was, "MO SHATS!!!"

In all seriousness though, we have been following losing baseball for years, where it doesn't matter who wins. It's all about stats at the end, and trying to win trades or signings or drafts.
But now in the context of cheering on a team to win it all, fans should watch all 162 games and "care"? If the Jays swept the Sox or If Dickey had two straight shutouts, fans here would be going wild. And rightly so. Enjoy a potential championship season. The downs, as well as the ups, is what makes it special.
