The Synthesized Lawrie Update Thread

From Richard Griffin's ongoing chat:

John Gibbons gave a brief update on Lawrie this morning in his office. It was almost apologetic in that the organization honestly believed he would be back in the lineup by now. Apparently he isn't scheduled for a game yet and therefore no timeline on his return.

It sounded like a little frustration on Gibby's part because with the side/ribcage/oblique it's all about the player and it seems Lawrie himself is being ultraconservative. He said he needs his right side to feel like his left side before he comes back. Hell, my right side hasn't felt like my left side since 1984 and I strap it up and never miss a column.

One thing I think Lawrie's absence is proving is that he is one of the more indispensable hard to replace players on this roster. Reyes is another.

Thought we could use a thread for Lawrie updates. I'm dying to see him back in the lineup.

Good call Rhet!

I'm not sure if it's just me, or perhaps all of us, but I think the absence of Lawrie has made a much larger impact on the team than I initially thought it would. The guy is a stud, keeps energy up with his fiery nature, amazing D. I think having him back will make a really big difference as well...hopefully it's soon.

This is starting to get a little weird/worrying.

Lawrie to me seems like a guy who would play baseball professionally for free, and I would be worried he'd come back too soon.

Now we have the media implying that he's being conservative and maybe could be coming back already? Just doesn't seem to add up.

I think he's just maturing a little bit and being more patient with himself. Last year he battled injuries too so it wouldn't surprise me to see him be careful and wait til he's at 100%. I'd be more worried if it were after 40 games, rather than 6. :)

yeah his defence has been sorely missed. so many balls have been hit up the left side of the infield that i feel he would get to. not too mention is takes away one of the holes in the lineup.

I'd rather have him miss 20 games now, and come back at full-strength for 142 of them, than the alternative. Having him rush back, be affected by it for the rest of the year, hurting his performance, does nobody any good.

We need Brett at 100% long-term.

Eh, I've played with guys like that. They need to know they're 100% so they can go 100%. I'm okay with it. If you're going to be a full tilt player, you'd better be pretty healthy to start off.

Lawrie would be great, but injuries happen throughout a season and by the time he gets back, some other guys will miss time with injury, too. Losing without Bautista is understandable. Probably Reyes, Dickey, etc. But losing regularly due to missing Lawrie isn't.

The team has probably botched at least 11 plays in 7 games at both 2B and 3B due to his absence so far. One could easily argue that he's the most important player on this team due to the dropoff behind him.

I'm shocked at how many times I've screamed at the TV "Lawrie could've made that play!" so far this year. But I'm glad he's being patient in his recovery. Injuries always seem longer/more significant when it's from the beginning of the season, simply because of the anticipation of watching the injured player play his first game.

yeaah I don't mind this approach. When he comes back I expect him to go go balls to the wall like he was before he was hurt (just don't be stupid and hurt himself again). waiting an extra week or 2 until he is absolutely 100 percent is the right thing to do.

At what point do we start to question the extent of the injury? Does a strained rib cage really keep guys like Lawrie out for over 6 weeks?

Lawrie missed over a month with a similar injury last season and when he came back he struggled offensively (one might assume may have been playing through it to a detrimental effect). So yes, apparently it does.

It makes me sad to see how many balls get hit to 3b and missed and I say to myself "Lawrie probably would have had that"

too bad there's no chance of bautista playing 3B temporarily. based on the 100 games we've seen him play there the past 4 years (granted only once last season), he'd at least be able to get to more grounders/throw over to first more accurately than the less-athletic derosa or izturis. i'd then plug izturis in at 2B, move melky to RF, and have bonifacio/davis split time in LF until lawrie is good to go.

Bautista was a bit Diva-ish about it last season. They talk about wanting to win over all things, so would he do it again for the good of the team? The question should at least be asked. If he's really your captain and your leader, he should.

Bautista isn't going to switch back to a position he hasn't played in two years for two weeks (especially considering he's dealing with his own injury at the moment that's prevented him from playing OF), so I'd put that out of your minds. He's not good defensively there anyway (little range).

No ones saying it would happen, just that it would probably be for the best (when he's 100% healthy) - at least he can make the cross diamond throw.

AA says Lawrie might be ready for the NY series April 19-21 or the following series in Baltimore. Taking batting practice now, "feel great."
