OT: Ump Admits Bad Call on Final Strike (Rangers/Rays)

What a way for Joe Nathan to earn his 300th save.
http://baseball.realgm.com/src_wiretap_ ... s_rangers/Plate umpire Marty Foster admitted after Monday's game between the Tampa Bay Rays and Texas Rangers that he made the wrong call to end the game.
"I saw the pitch and of course don't have the chance to do it again," Foster told a pool reporter after the game. "But had I had a chance to do it again, I wouldn't call that pitch a strike."

Wow, that was horrible but glad he admitted it maybe he just wanted to get the game over with. I have seen lots of calls blown but this one was pretty bad.

This isn't even close to being one of those "well it was a bad call but at least he admitted it" scenarios. This was an absolutely pathetic, unbelievably incompetent call that should at least get him suspended.

Maybe it had something to do with the home team pitching

It's time for MLB to incorporate Fox's StrikeZone-thingy into their on field officiating
Give home plate umps a a device about the size of a cell phone which they hold in their hand during play
As the pitch crosses the plate a red or green light flashes on the device
red = ball, green = strike
Problem solved

The MLB won't like it because it takes away from umpires that have their own strikezone.
-I believe that the umpiring crew should be expanded to 5.
-Managers should be given 3 challanges throughout the game. If their first 2 are unsuccessful, then the 3rd one is taken away. If all 3 are successful, the manager can keep challanging until he is unsucessful.
-The 5th umpire is in the pressbox, ready to take on challanges made by the manager. The Homeplate umpire should wear a headset so he can quickly communicate with umpire in the pressbox and get the call right.

That's not even a strike in the huge, widened strike zones of little league.

Umps aren't supposed to have "their own strikezone"
Their job is to officiate the game using MLB's strikezone
I've heard the argument for these "challenges" before, but rather than have all these arbitrary restrictions, let's just get the calls right 100% of the time
And I'll take it even further...
Why should the manager have to use a challenge to ensure the right call was made?
That's the job of MLB and their umpires

For the same reason it's used in almost every sport: how long do you wait while someone checks the replay of EVERYTHING? And if they're not checking everything, how do they decide what to check?

Well like the NHL, the refs and the league decide what to check. The NHL system is pretty cool because the refs decide what gets checked, and they actually go to the head office in Toronto realtime for the official check of replays and call.
The NBA does the same as the NHL, with the rules already calling for what gets checked. The NFL turned it into sportsmanship with having a certain number of checks, chosen by the coaches. Tennis has the equivalent electronic check for balls along the line. I think they go to that system for any calls on the line.

MLB already does have the same system as the NHL/NBA, except limited to home runs. And there is lots of talk about adding a coaches challenge to the NHL, as people aren't happy with the scope of the reviews.
Reviewing balls on the line only works when the ball is called fair. If it's called foul there's nothing you can do about it (other than take away a strike?).

They can keep the umps but implement a challenge system like every other sport has.

Based on PitchFX , I'm not sure if Janssen had a good final inning. Bunch of calls went his way.

So, J-Roc pretty much countered your point about it being used in almost every sport
But yes, I think just about every disputed call should be reviewed
Is the goal not to get 100% of the calls right?

Truthfully I think yes... The human element adds a whole other facet to the game. If they wanted 100% of the calls someone would have invented a computer program that could officiate a game.

Well even with computers and lasers, you probably still need humans in position for those times the electronics aren't working (How often is the clock not working at a basketball arena). But certainly if the electronics are in place, then sure, call the game correctly. Balls and strikes are so easy, if PitchFX is to be believed. The only thing can causes delay are situations requiring a replay, like in baseball seeing if a fan got their hand on a ball, or in football to see if a catch was made. But anything to do with a ball going within a line should be called by electronics, if possible.
