John Gibbons Discussion Thread

Post#1 » by Kapono » Thu Apr 11, 2013 5:54 am

Lets use this thread to discuss the manager John Gibbons throughout the year.

I think hes been pretty darn good with his management thus far. Bullpen management is on a whole other level when compared to Farrell.

Hes platooning Lind which I am very happy about. Great job today pinch hitting for Lind when the Tigers brought a lefty out.

Yeah people can argue that hes stuck with Bonafacio at 2nd for too long but I feel like Izturis is better at 3rd than Derosa (even though both are **** defensively).

What are your thoughts on Gibby so far?

Didn't like the IBB today of Fielder (IBBs are rarely the right decision to make in any situation), but other than that, he's been fine strategically (we're pinch hitting at the right times and are platooning Lind for the first time in four seasons which apparently neither Cito or Farrell were capable of doing from 2010-2012). I wouldn't be surprised if Rasmus starts getting platooned as well for one of Davis or Wells and the team would probably be better off for it.

Bullpen management has also been fine. He's using our better relievers in the higher leverage situations and is clearly paying attention to the splits of opposing batters. I liked the decision to go with one of the team's better relievers, Delabar, in a high leverage situation early today, even if it didn't work out.

I think the Bonifacio at 2B thing is a bit of a team mandate to see what they have in him there before Lawrie comes back. They want to know if he can actually play the infield in case one of Reyes or Izturis gets hurt. I've long since seen enough, but perhaps AA hasn't.

I think this is pretty close. Even if it's just Gibby I think it's a positive that the manager doesn't panic the first week of the season. When you have talent sometimes the best managerial move is just to show confidence in your players and do nothing.

my only issue with his is that, i believe, we've seen BoneFace attempt a bunt twice. neither effort worked. and the situation where the bunt was called (I think one was early in a game with 0 out and a runner on 1st) didn't really make much sense.

I think that was Bonafacio deciding to bunt for a base hit himself.

Judging by his smile yesterday after he attempted to lay down that bunt, and the fact that the runner on third didn't really break at all, it wasn't called from the bench...he likely thought that the third baseman was back far enough to sneak in a single, and went for it.

I've been pleased with Gibby thus far. He's not a genius, but what you want in a manager is ultimately a decent understanding of matchups and leverage, and he has that; pinch-hitting DeRosa is a good example, because many managers are far too hesitant to swap hitters earlier than the 8th/9th inning, and that decision might have been the difference. Same with the bullpen use...Delabar had a rough outing, but it was the right call to use him in a high-leverage situation, and was a solid decision to throw Cecil out there in the 7th against a lefty-heavy threesome.

He looked like a fat little out of shape beer drinking man when he was standing beside Farrell in one of the pregame huddles with the umps,,it made me laugh out loud seeing it..

Gibby's been great, and seems even better after having Farrell and Cito as manager the last few seasons.

Rasmus should be platooned as regularly as Lind.

But I'm happy so far. Will be interesting to see how he handles the veteran relievers if a guy like Santos and/or Oliver struggle.

Lind is out of the lineup today because he's 1-for-10 vs. Fister.

I mean, bullpen management aside, the less frequently Lind is in the lineup, the more I like Gibby. I'm an easy guy to please.

And with Wells now in the fold, he might well be if Rasmus' performance vs. lefties doesn't pick up.

Or just call up Gose, he doesn't have to hit a lot to provide value with his defense.

At this point in time I think that would be a lateral move at best.

He's about the only game that doesn't look sharp in the new/retro Jays colours.

He managed a great game yesterday but right now the Jays are not playing to a level where GIbbons managing will make or break our season.

I thought Gibby pulled Dickey too early today but none the less he showed fantastic bullpen management again. Good move putting Cecil in to face the lefty

Already pissed off dickey lol.

He's done this before with his starters. He's known for making stupid pitching changes

Done what? Pulled starters for good relievers that stranded their runners? Probably.

Uh, no. Certainly not. In fact, he's more known for the opposite (at least by those with an awareness and understanding of what they're actually watching).
