Jose Reyes was smiling again Monday.

Reyes found out that his left ankle injury was a little less serious than first feared, and that he may be able to return in about eight weeks. The Blue Jays had originally estimated that their shortstop was expected to miss three months.

Perhaps this should just be in the Reyes injury thread -- but since it's very good news, wanted to make sure people saw it.

Maybe this isn't legit?

John Lott ‏@LottOnBaseball 1m
Gibbons said he'd heard nothing about Reyes down time reduced to eight weeks, as reported elsewhere.

The funny thing about that quote; not saying that the CBS report is valid or not. I simply wouldn't expect Gibby to be in the know either way. Gibbons wouldn't be the best guy to ask about it IMO. A May return, as long as not rushed would be incredible. The team's performance should not be a determining factor in how quickly he comes back - but I'd imagine if this team is going well the Jays will be able to afford to have a lot of patience in bring Reyes back.

Don't rush this please. Window of opportunity is 3 years.

I guess that settles it:

AA: Reyes still looking at three months, maybe a little less.

Who knows.

Reyes posted a photo of himself at the airport on his instagram account 2 hours ago

Caption: Next Stop Toronto. Good news my people.

Yeah, I'm gonna be on #TeamPositivity about this one. I'm hopeful he'll be back sooner than we think.

I think he pretty much won us over before the trade was approved when he started posting pics in Jays gear :D

I don't remember the last time I saw an elite player be so excited to play here....

It's a shame we won't see Reyes and Lawrie play together for a while. They seem perfect for each other with the enthusiasm they both share for baseball. I could see them getting along pretty well.

8 or 12 weeks isn't bad. Best thing about Reyes is he already showed what he can do. If one of these guys with a slow start goes does that long, we'd never know what they might bring back to the table.

Everything I heard is that it's the same amount of time--3 months--he's out. It's just that he won't need surgery, which is where the "injury not as bad as feared" quote comes from.

Jose Reyes won't need surgery on left ankle; will miss 3 months

Blue Jays shortstop Jose Reyes won't need surgery on his sprained left ankle, but is still expected to miss three months, general manager Alex Anthopoulos says.

Reyes visited a specialist in Charlotte on Monday who confirmed the diagnosis of a severely sprained ankle. Reyes was injured sliding into second base in Friday's game at Kansas City. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list Saturday.

Anthopoulos says Reyes will be in a cast for two weeks and then in a walking boot for an additional two weeks, meaning he won't be ready to begin rehab activity for at least a month.

Glad there is no fractrure, but interesting that they are casting it. Suggests a lot of joint instability, possible high ankle sprain given the mechanism of the injury. I really hope he doesn't have any issues with the rehab. The muscles in your lower leg get really wrecked with a sever sprain and need a lot of retraining.
