Juan Segura steals first

Gets its own thread because this is something that only happens every couple decades, and rarely in circumstances as bizarre as this:

http://mlb.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?conte ... id=8878756

Summary:

- Segura walks.
- Segura steals second.
- Braun walks.
- Segura attempts to steal third, pitcher throws to that base, and in the confusion of a rundown both Braun and Segura end up on second base.
- Umpire rules Braun out, because Segura is entitled to the base under that circumstance.
- Segura, believing that he's out, trots back to the dugout, before the first base coach plants him on the bag, having realized that he was never called out.

And, to finish it off...Segura gets caught trying to steal second.

how fantastic is this. except i don't get how segura is not called out, getting tagged multiple times while off second base, literally 2 feet in front of the ump just staring at the play.

I don't get it. Seems to me he was out somehow at 2nd. And even the announcers thought so. And it seems like a makeup call that he got called out trying to re-steal 2nd.

What I saw was him getting tagged twice, but both times while touching the bag. The second time was bang bang for him leaving the bag though.

Seemed pretty obvious the second tag got him. He clearly wasn't on the base and should've been called out. No question.

Back in the 80s Lloyd Moseby stole second, went back to first after he thought the ball was caught, then stole second again on the same play :D

Segura was definitely on the bag for the first tag and definitely off the bag for the 2nd tag. Even the ump was confused.

I thought the rule was whoever got to the bag first owned it, which was obviously Braun? Guess I'm wrong on that one.

I don't quite understand why he'd run back to first? Unless he thought that the ball was hit and caught?

So for counting stat purposes... is that a SB + CS + SB + CS? Or just a SB + SB + CS? Or a SB - SB + CS...?

This was the first thing that came to mind when I saw Segura do it. I think it was on one of those old Blue Jays VHS tapes I watched about a hundred times when I was a kid. EDIT: After checking into it, it was Super Duper Baseball Bloopers. Too old to be on Sky High I guess. I feel like digging those out at my parents house tomorrow.

Moseby's is definitely weirder 'cause why first? Does he really think it was a caught flyball? I can't imagine, but it's the only thing that makes sense. Segura just gives up and the coach is smart enough to put him on the bag at 1B, but he doesn't really steal it back.

And the second tag likely got him to begin with, but really the minute both guys touch 2B, the ump should make it timeout and clarify the situation IMO.

He still might have been on the bag during that 2nd tag - very close.

I think it was a combination of A) He completely loses the ball and B) having lost the ball, went with better to be safe than sorry.

I should note that Moseby is incredibly underrated as an athlete. The Jays have had very, very few players who were + guys in as many departments as he was, in his prime, from an athletic POV.

But, he was also...er...not excessively bright. Really nice guy, though.
