Terrible Sportsnet camera work

Post#1 » by Natural11 » Sat Apr 20, 2013 10:37 pm

Does anyone else find the camera work generally annoying this year? They keep cutting to the behind the plate cam for live pitches so you can't see what the heck is going on. That's a replay angle folks, not one you use for live pitches.

It's also kind of creepy how they deliberately seek out the most attractive women they can find in the audience and awkwardly pan in on them at random intervals. Anyone else notice this? It's not really a complaint I guess, as I appreciate a hot woman like the next guy. But I can just picture this cameraman peering through the crowd half the game checking out women through his zoom lens, looking for the next shot

The hot woman thing is something every single broadcaster has been doing every game since TV was invented.

They think it's cool. The viewers just want to see what the hell is going on. Guys in the truck all over again.

Sportsnet is the broadcaster. Dome Productions is the "guys in the truck"

First at bat for Rajai Davis today. Infield grounder and a bang-bang play at 1st. At full speed, I thought he beat out the throw. They didn't show a replay. wtf

I hate the behind the batter camera angle you can't see what the hell is going on. Its like the Raptors camera cew shooting from the opposite end of the court.

me too....I really hate this view. It's like they are trying to include the runner on first, the batter, and the pitcher. It's is absolutely awful and you miss half of the play.

Funny thing about those angles is they look like angles you might see if you were sitting in the stands. But I find with baseball, when sitting in the stands, you really can't see what's going on pitch by pitch. The best part of watching on tv is supposed to be the regular angle behind the pitcher.

agreed....it does look how it does when you're in the stands.
But I'm watching it on TV so I can see better angles, not the same ones if I was there in person.
That's the advantage of watching live sports on TV, well it's supposed to be.

I hope they revert back to the old angles. No need to try and be inventive. I'll just end up having to stream the other teams feed.

Rogers sportnet camera crew will continue to use 'cute' angles, as they affectionately call them. While we all call them rubbish, since we can't see the pitch or plate. Throw them the wheel and they'll try to reinvent it they are so pretentious with their cutesy camera angles during Raptor and Bluejay games, they really think they are at the cutting edge. Meanwhile it makes my stomach turn.

They stink.

anyone with twitter should voice their displeasure to @DomeProductions.

if you don't have twitter, then may i recommend perhaps a more effective option?

info@domeproductions.com

i'm gonna shoot them an email right now, see what these morons have to say. i think we all should because this "innovative" camera work has been extremely irritating. i'm **** sick and tired of the broadcast cutting to fans in the 500 level outfield or on the CF patio in between every batter. the behind-the-catcher camera angle is also **** terrible and has no place in a baseball broadcast.

I also don't like those shots of the drunk fans, but it must be a marketing thing Rogers wants to do, to make viewers want to be there. Won't work on me, but I've come across quite a few college age kids who think it's a party.

The behind the catcher angle is the only one that I really can't live with. And they only use it so they can super impose an ad in the batter's eye.

Solution: Instead of having the SN logo under pitch trax, just put the Home Hardware/Honda/Orange Julius logo there. I'd rather have an ad under pitch trax all game than see a single usage of the behind the catcher angle.

Yeah I know, it just seems like this crew does it a lot more frequently than others. Every other batter we're getting these awkward fan cams. It seems normal on other broadcasts, but it starts to stand out when it's being thrown at you constantly.

Also, whoever is manning the camera out in CF has the case of the shakes.

They always switch to that camera before the shot is in focus and it makes me feel inebriated.

As J-Roc pointed out, the new camera angles reek of marketing influences. No surprise there is a big Budweiser logo in CF which is captured quite vividly from the behind the home plate angle. Also, I'm sure that 20-somethings with a tallboy of Budweiser get more screen time than any Blue Jay during any given game.

I read in Bob Elliott's opening day column that the ushers in the Private Boxes (Acura Private Boxes) had to change uniforms so there clothes matched the colours of the Honda brand.

I guess they have to make money to pay the increases in payroll, however, it would be nice if they didn't alienate viewers in the process. This weekend I was contemplating MLB.TV because I think I'd prefer the opposition broadcast.

I have friends that work at Dome. ALL direction of camera work is done by Sportsnet.

Think about what this live pitch home plate view includes.... the stupid new centerfield advertising .... Who would want to include that? Rogers.

Couldn't they just switch to the backstop view in between pitches?

They go to the camera behind home plate so they show off the sponsors logo on the batters eye, pretty smart actually.

Blue Jays TV>Idiots in the "truck" at Raptor games. Both aren't goood, though.

That behind the plate angle looks like a video game glitch when the camera doesn't follow the play, it's that horrible. It's pretty sad that it's intentional too.
