Newstalk 1010: Blue Jays games more about beer than baseball

Post#1 » by J-Roc » Tue Apr 23, 2013 3:15 pm

Newstalk 1010 has been going on about this this morning, with Gregg Zaun's comments last night on one of their shows.

http://www.newstalk1010.com/News/localn ... D=10534913

Also a video of the fan throwing up.

Drunk, loud, and obnoxious fans who hurl expletives and toss cups of beer onto the field are becoming more common at Rogers Centre.

Zaun tells NEWSTALK 1010's Friendly Fire the fans at the ballpark are getting younger.

"I think it has a lot to do with the fact that there's a really young team on the field ... but its amazing the bravado that comes out of these kids and the nasty, filthy things that they say," he says.

Zaun says thanks to the troublemakers, his broadcast team has had to protect their studio.

"We had to put a curtain around our studio because ... the drunken behavior and buffoonery (from some fans) just kept getting worse and worse."

Says Zaun things can take a turn for the worse when the Jays are losing into the later innings of the game.

Maybe someone can find a direct link to his interview on the Friendly Fire show last night. I think he had some more quotes about the "vile" things people say to him and Jamie Campbell.

The way we've played to start the season, I need to be drunk to watch this team...

I really don't understand how people throw down $11 a beer. I'd have to spend way more on beer than the ticket itself to even get drunk. And, it's pretty obvious these guys (and gals) are just there to drink and have a good time. Baseball is one of the few sports that allows you to do that. If they want people to stop drinking, then don't sell beers anymore. I'm sure as hell they won't be doing that any time soon.

Toronto "baseball" fans are terrible. The casual fanbase is 70% comprised of idiots who only go to the games to boo former players for no apparent reason. BRB Lyle Overbay is in town; better show up to boo him LMAO.

Your post is so ignorant in so many ways. You are clearly confused and know nothing about baseball in this city. Yes, there are ongoing problems with drunken antics and the number of antics seems to have gone up (or at least the media attention on said incidents has). But going as far as to say that the majority of fans are idiots and they only go to games to boo former players? Wtf? We don't have any former players that warrant that kind of attention so I have no idea what the hell you're talking about. Sure Rios and some other former players might get booed when they play at the dome, but you're out of your mind if you think that even 1 person in the stands went to that game because Rios was going to be there

The goal for the organization is the fill the stadium. If they didn't want to risk attracting these types of fans they'd stop selling beer or at least make much tighter restrictions with it.

Gotta take the good with the bad to make $$$.

Overblown media BS as usual. Need to take the focus off the team's stinky performance on the field and focus on non-issues to take attention away from the real problems.

And anyway, that's why you avoid all Friday/Saturday/Sunday games if you just want to watch games without the annoyance. Not only will you find fantastic deals on stubhub for amazing seats, you also avoid the cluster**** of idiot drunks.

Otherwise, on the slight occasion when you want to be one of those idiot drunks with your friends, that's when you take in those weekend sets.

The Jays have a "really young team on the field"? Maybe it's analysis like that that makes some fans insult your analysis...

My take would be --- baseball tickets are relatively cheap. The young fans that can make a night of fun out of a Jays game likely don't (on average) have the means or the opportunity to get out to a Leafs game. So you go buy a $16 Jays ticket and make the most of it.

As to the sensitivities of Zaunie and the Yankee Bullpen and Vernon Wells, go walk through any NFL tailgate wearing an opposing Jersey and grade the comments you'll get compared to at the Roger's Centre. Guaranteed to be harsh, but invariably done in good humour. To me, that's the key. And if it's done in good humour, it's nothing worth getting excited about. Unless you're a narcissist.

I went to a couple of Jays games this year. I happened to go to games where there were blowouts (The Red Sox game against Dickey and Yankees last friday). It is overblown. When this team is getting its butt kicked and the game is pretty much done in the 4th inning, of course you might get some idiot drunks being rowdy, because the pathetic showing on the field leaves you with nothing else to be excited for.

was at the yankees game where teh game was pretty much out of reach in the 8th and 9th inning. The only thing i noticed was the number of paper airplanes increasing. It didnt get too crazy, but i am pretty surprised at how fast a paper airplane can shoot down from the 200/500 level to the 100 level.

Seems you have my luck - those are the two games I've attended so far this year too.

Hopefully our luck changes because it is not fun when you are looking forward to a great 9 inning game, and the game is pretty much over by the end of the 3rd inning.

I've had season seats for 3 years now and I pretty much take my son to all the Saturday afternoon games, you know Jr Jay Saturday. We've never had problems before this weekend ever.

There was about 10 guys sitting in my row and they were hammered by the 3rd inning. They were totally obnoxious, swearing yelling at every woman who went by and swearing non stop. When I told the guy to cool it he told me not to take my kid to Saturday games. The thing is that's the only time you would take your kids.

So I think there is something to it this season and its noticeable if you go to a bunch of games.

This is ridiculous from somebody who is usually a person worth listening to. I don't know if you're joking or not.... I suppose you'd share the same viewpoint on all black "people" if you had a problem with a minority of them, right?

Anyway, I agree that the booing is ridiculous. "You used to play for my favourite team and you were traded away or weren't offered a contract to return? BOOOOO!"

I also am amazed that people are getting drunk off of $11 beers at a Jays game. I will probably not buy another one all season.

Well, that's just the way it is for weekend games or Friday games. I'd have to agree that fans at jays games can be pretty obnoxious, but that's just been my experience. I sit in the 113 zone most of the time so I guess that area just attracts idiots.

Friday night games and weekend games are pretty bad in terms of drunken idiots, especially in the outfield seats or 500 level.

No, I'm not kidding. Toronto sports "fans" are the worst. The baseball "fans", if you can even call them that, are hilariously ignorant about the game. People in this city don't like baseball, they like the idea of having a 'good' baseball team.

We had a HOF pitcher's career coming to an end in Toronto to the tune of embarrassing attendance figures, but AJ Burnett returns to town in a Yankees uniform? Sellout crowd and an atmosphere that suggested we were in game 7 of the World Series LMAO.

I fail to see what blacks have to do with anything...closet racist, much?

Probably true. I do think most of the real baseball fans in the city come out to the games though, as I end up almost always sitting near a group of people that know their stuff. It's just that there isn't a lot of them in comparison to the people that come out just to get drunk and go home and facebook post that they were at the game.
