AA Constantly Waivers

If the day ends in “y,” Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos is likely to claim a player on waivers.

To some rival executives, Anthopoulos is exploiting the rules to maximum advantage, building depth at minimal cost — the price of a $20,000 claim.

But to other execs, Anthopoulos is violating the spirit of the waiver process, which is intended to create major league opportunities for players who are out of options and get bumped off 40-man rosters.

Interesting article (Rosenthal)-- AA defends his incessant waiver-claiming and DFAing as a means to insure the big club while bolster the farm (inexpensively)..... Others contend it's an attempt to forcibly demote MLB talent/uncool.

Don't understand what the big deal is. If he thinks there are players that can help this team (like Casper Wells or Aaron Laffey who will probably end up starting tomorrow), why shouldn't he put a claim in? Why wouldn't any GM?

Like in the NHL where putting in an offer on a restricted FA is frowned upon, this is also pretty stupid. He's exploiting the rules? Yes, yes he is. Why isn't everyone else?

Totally agree.

You do what you gotta do to improve your team and this a very easy and cheap way to do it.

It should be against the rules. But it isn't yet. I don't see a reason not to exploit it until it is.

I would be curious to know how many they have successfully snuck through to the minors.
