JA Happ injury update thread

Post#1 » by Kapono » Wed May 8, 2013 3:37 am

Hopefully it is nothing too serious. Only update so far is that they are still conducting tests on Happ in the hospital.

That they're still doing test at this point is a very good sign - it means that nothing requiring immediate action has been found. Fingers crossed it stays that way.

If he gets away with just a concussion, I'll count us as lucky.

At first I wasn't sure how bad it was but from the second replay I saw it seemed pretty serious. Hope he's ok. It came back so quick at him.

Terrible. Saw the blood and it looked bad. Surprised this stuff doesn't happen more often.

I have to think that Happ acknowledging the crowd while being carried out on a stretcher was a good thing. But I really can't imagine being hit in the head with that much force. A friend of mine was hiking around the escarpment a four or five years ago, when a rock was dislodged by hikers above and came down and hit him on the head. He was helicoptered to the hospital and not expected to live. Fortunately he survived, but now will walk with a cane for the rest of his life and has suffered some cognitive impairment (he was a lawyer).

I was worrying about eye damage. If that ball broke the orbital socket, it could have destroyed his eye.

Nursing supervisor Natasha Keller told The Associated Press that Happ had been admitted to the hospital and was in stable condition.

Wow, I guess he was lucky it didn't do more damage. Head contusion & laceration on left ear would probably be the best situation that could come out of something like that.

Happened to a one-time Toronto prospect. Huck Flener was playing winter ball, took a liner in the face, and his eye exploded.

Ben Nicholson-Smith ‏@bnicholsonsmith 15m

J.A. Happ left the hospital today with the use of crutches and a brace on his knee. Full details to come at Sportsnet.ca and on Sportsnet.

Barry Davis ‏@SNBarryDavis 25m

A player told me last Happ was concerned with his knee after going down. Had brace on it as he left hospital. #bluejays

Should read this.

http://articles.latimes.com/2001/feb/05/sports/sp-21440

Two weeks ago, Huck Flener was a professional baseball player, a left-hander who pitched in parts of three seasons for the Toronto Blue Jays. Now he's not sure what he will do.

Pitching in a Venezuelan Winter League game, he was struck by a line drive hit back up the middle. The ball, as far as doctors can tell, hit directly on his right eye ball, which exploded.

It was a horrific scene. And one that Flener, as he sits wearily in the living room of his apartment, recalls with little emotion.

"It would have been a tragedy if the ball hit a few inches over and caused brain damage," said Flener, 31, who starred for Cal State Fullerton from 1998 to '90.

"I will find a decent job and I have a great family. To me, this just feels like the next stop. I don't feel sorry for myself. Things a lot more tragic have happened to other people. If anything, my story is just a career cut short."

Glad to hear it's pretty much best case scenario. It'll be interesting to see how he reacts when back on the mound, it must be quite the mental block to get back out there.

edit: just saw the update about the knee, was kind of worried about that after watching the .gif of the play last night, his knee bent really awkwardly as he was going down.

In the end, it might be the knee that does him in...crazy.

Going back to last night at the time of the incident, I think we'd all be happy if that's the worst outcome.
