Bring back 'SkyDome' name campaign

Post#1 » by Geddy » Tue Aug 13, 2013 4:31 pm

Campaign aims to restore 'SkyDome' to Blue Jays home

Branding company wants Rogers to consider retro name change

As the Toronto Blue Jays play out the stretch in another disappointing season, a social media campaign seeks to revive a stadium name synonymous with the team’s World Series winning years.

The campaign asks Rogers Communications to restore “SkyDome” to the name of the team’s home stadium.

The stadium began life as the SkyDome in 1989 before it was renamed in 2005 as “Rogers Centre” after Rogers purchased the team.

Toronto media design agency Branding For Good has launched a “bring back the dome” campaign, urging the stadium to be called Rogers SkyDome. The stadium — the world’s first with a retractable roof — will celebrate its 25th anniversary next spring. The campaign's organizers hope to gather 50,000 signatures in support of the name change.

The company said in a statement the SkyDome name is not only reminicient of the team's early 1990s glory years, it's also what many fans still call the stadium.

“What we’re asking is for Canadians to show their ongoing love for the SkyDome,” a spokesperson said. He added that the retro name change will “unlock a deep attachment many of us have to the stadium by using the name SkyDome again.

"The name SkyDome has a strong literal reference to what you see when the roof is fully retracted. It’s what a lot of us grew up knowing, and what a lot of people still call it anyway.”

The campaign includes a website (bringbackthedome.ca/), Twitter account (@bringbackdome) and a Facebook page (/bringbackthedome).

I'm all for bringing back the SkyDome name. The less you have to say "Rogers" the better (even though I still refer to it as SkyDome).

I find the "Centre" part even more shameful. Has any baseball stadium in history ever been called a "center"? And learn to spell center, ffs.

It's called what it is precisely so you are forced to use the Rogers name. If its renamed the Rogers SkyDome, people will drop the Rogers faster than you can drop their cellphone service. That's why almost all of the corporately branded facilities are called arenas or centres... so you can't drop the corporate name... After all, if you say to someone, I'm going down to the arena, it's pretty nebulous... in some US cities, there are multiple large arenas

Don't get me wrong, I'd be fine with such a change, but I'm neither holding my breath nor moving it to the top of my priority list.

It's so simple, but people really don't understand it. Then they start pointless online petitions that serve in the end as a massive nostalgia/circlejerk that is tossed aside after a month. It's a business, people. They're not changing it back to the Skydome as much as you or me want them to.

Also, the word is spelled "Centre" here in Canada along with words like metre, litre, and other similar words. Sure, it's silly, but that's how we spell it. The English language isn't exactly phonetic anyways.

Welcome to Canada, where "Centre" is the correct spelling.

Most people I know still call it the SkyDome. Rogers probably doesn't want it called the "Rogers SkyDome" because then people would refer to it as just the "SkyDome" or "Dome". Contrast that to the "Rogers Centre". You won't find anyone saying, "Hey, I'm heading down to the Centre tonight to catch a ballgame."
Nick Nurse recounting his first meeting with Kawhi:
“We could have gone forever. (Raptors management) kept knocking on the door and I was like, ‘A couple more minutes.’ Because we were really into it."

Rogers SkyDome sounds even worse, tbh.

Stick with the current arrangement: the Rogers Centre is an aging, brutalist monstrosity owned by a giant, faceless corporation. The SkyDome, on the other hand, was a tribute to modern ingenuity, a magical place where even Toronto sports teams could win. Change the name back to SkyDome the day after we clinch a playoff spot, however many years away that might be.

But didn't you all hear, Rogers is a little patriotic upstart Canadian company being assaulted by evil Verizon coming up from the colonial United States of America, aided by our traitor government! It's un-Canadian not to support Rogers(and Bell). I bet you guys who prefer Skydome are all Americans pretending to be Canadian.

;) Those radio commercials make me hate Rogers and Bell even more. Hopefully Verizon comes up, puts them out of business and buys the Skydome.

This seems somewhat counterproductive.

Well said, this should pretty much wrap up the debate.

Team sucks... "Hey, let's retire the number of the key player from the World Series teams from the early 90s"

Team still sucks... "Hey, let's re-broadcast all of the World Series victories from the early 90s"

Team still sucks ... "Hey, lets go back to using the logo we used during the World Series in the early 90s"

Team still sucks ... "Hey, lets give a coaching job to the ace of the team that won the World Series in the early 90s"

Team still sucks ... "Hey, lets go back to calling the stadium the name it had when we won the World Series in the early 90s"

I like that they're back to the old logo and I never stopped calling it SkyDome, but it's pretty pathetic that we're still clinging to 20 year old nostalgia.

Yeah, cause it's not like the name SkyDome was used during the dark era.

This makes so much sense I'm not sure why it wasn't done years ago. The SkyDome was such a unique and perfect name for the venue - it was a travesty when they changed it.

Rogers is much too greedy to change it however. For years people still called it the SkyDome but Rogers Centre seems to have caught on and become more popular lately. Rogers knows if it was called the Rogers SkyDome people would just call it the SkyDome and omit the "Rogers" part entirely.

I hope one day they take the "Rogers" part out entirely and just rename it to the SkyDome and knock down (or at the very least, move) that stupid statue of Ted Rogers - what an embarrassment.

Yes, it was. Like the most basic joke that's even possible: "Ha ha, you guys spell it wrong over there." Did you really think that I thought one of the biggest corporations in Canada was spelling the name of its stadium wrong? wow smh :nonono:

I honestly don't care enough to petition for a name change.

Also it's worth noting that Rogers can write it off as an advertising expense, which could produce bigger budgets than if it was the sky dome.
