Thinking about how we might free up some money for next season, or pick up a 2B in a trade. Trading Janssen was an idea discussed here at the deadline. The Jays have a really deep relief situation, with depth at BUF like Stilson and even Jeffress. Santos, McGowan, Rogers if he doesn't start, Cecil, Loup, Wagner, Delabar, Lincoln. If Perez doesn't need TJ surgery, he might be a candidate. Even losing Oliver to retirement doesn't leave much of a dent. I have to think Janssen has some decent trade value, and my own feeling is that he's given us his best two seasons, and next season would be pushing it.

When rested, Wagner seems to be the archtypical closer with the best velocity and now pretty good command and location, exactly what you want in a closer, and he was 15-15 in save opportunities in BUF. Delabar is in the same class, though his record with inherited runners is a little dicier, which is why I would prefer a dual closer situation.

I don't love Delabar as a long-term option simply because of his walk rate. Personally, I'd be happy trading both he and Janssen for either upgrades elsewhere or pieces that could be used to upgrade elsewhere, and if we have enough good relievers, a closer will emerge from what remains.

Interstingly, Marty brown the last few games has been going to Jeffress over Carreno to close, also using Stilson to close but likes his ability to pitch two innings. Trade Delabar, too? Certainly not outrageous, we are that deep in relief talent that I'd rather have a solid second baseman or catcher than Janssen and/or Delabar.

I want absolutely no part of Jeffress as the eighth guy in the 'pen, never mind as the closer. His walk rate is just as awful as ever.

Looks like Cecil really put a dent in his chances in last night's test run. He'll most likely be slotted in as the 7th/8th guy again next year and that's probably where he needs to be. I don't think Santos is ever going to find the success he had in Chicago, so that leaves Delabar, Wagner, and the guys from Buffalo if you trade Janssen. As it stands now, I'd keep Delabar and let him and Wagner battle it out in the Spring. I don't think either guy is going to be a 40-save guy, but if we can have a closer by committee situation next season, I think we'd still be in decent shape (that's even if we have that many games to close out...).

Janssen has peaked and I think they really mishandled this one. Maybe they can move him somewhere in the next couple of weeks though.

cecil, loup, santos and delabar are elite 7/8 inning guys...thats what u need to be playoff team...really dont want a closer with no closing experience for the season if we want to win even win it all, we have the pieces to win, thats should be d goal...delabar arm is live but erratic, walks wayy too much to be a closer, hes perfect for the setup, added pressure would be even worse for a guy like delabar, wagner also doesn't have elite nasty closing stuff...casey just gets the job done for some reason, and if its not him then we need someone with experience that will just get it done

I think we have plenty of closer options, and frankly, unless you have a sound foundation in the starting rotation and at positions like 2B, you don't need elite closers. They won't have enough leads to protect.
