If the wire tap is right and are weakness is at 2B, could we not make a move at Cano if we are letting Josh Johnson go and maybe get rid of Lind and trade Mark B and let some of the young guys move into the rotation?
Hmm...He def would add to our line up!

Not likely, no. He'll re-sign with New York, in all likelihood.
And while 2B is a big weakness, the rotation is a far bigger one. Buehrle is going nowhere because he's one of the highest-paid players in the league, but we're also not likely to go anywhere with a rotation comprised of kids, either.

There is no reason why The Yankees will overpay to keep him

How much would the Jays have to pay him to have even the slightest chance of acquiring him?

We'd probably need to get into the territory of $200m over eight ($25m pa) before the Yankees would consider balking, and that's assuming that he signs purely on salary. Given that his representation is Jay Z's new agency, we might need to go even higher than that (or at least lengthen the deal). Not a great idea, and it's not going to happen.

He'll sign with the Dodgers if it isn't the Yankees.

An 8-year deal for Cano would mean you'd still be paying him huge dollars at 38. For every player that continues to dominate into their late 30's (e.g. Ortiz), there are significantly more that are below average regulars, bench players, or worse. If Cano would do five years for $130-140M, that would be one thing, but of course just about every other team would be willing to hand out that contract, too. These mega deals are best left to the $150M+ payroll teams like the Yankees and Dodgers. If they don't work out, they have the payroll depth to still be competitive.

It's completely irrelevant, given that i) he and his representatives won't want him here, ii) we are unlikely to go into next season with a payroll of $180m+, which is likely what would be necessary to acquire Cano
and have enough of a functioning rotation that we wouldn't lose every game 9-7.
