Henderson Alvarez Throws a No-No

Nightmare season 2013......

Henderson Alvarez pitched one of baseball's most bizarre no-hitters, celebrating in the on-deck circle when the Miami Marlins scored on a two-out wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth inning to beat the AL Central champion Detroit Tigers 1-0 Sunday.

After Alvarez finished off the ninth with the game scoreless, he had to wait to see if it would become an official no-hitter. A Major League Baseball ruling in 1991 said only complete games of nine or more innings with no hits would count.

Wow. This hurts.

Yeah, he's coming around. Strikeout rate still needs to improve a tad, but it's not far from workable at this point, and everything else looks pretty damned solid.

Alvarez will do well in the National League and a home big ball park. His HR rate is excellent now and he can get away with the lack of K's and high GB rate in the NL. I think the Jays rushed him and he will never be as good as he could have been had he developed more to his arsenal, but based on his current skill set, he is a guy I'd imagine will carve out a nice career in the NL. Put him in the AL East again, and that HR rate and K/9 will get exposed in a hurry.

Congratulations to him. If he ever gets a consistent out pitch he could be consistently tough.

Not really, he'd get eaten alive in the AL East. Good for him, though.

I still think he will be a good pitcher and was mad we traded him. I can buy the fact that he would not do much with our team though after seeing what happened with our starters this year.

Wells a perfect game, Doc a no-no and a perfect game, now Alvarez. Anyone else get a no-no after leaving the Jays?

David Cone, Al Leiter, and (technically) Mike Flanagan and Brandon League were each part of one in relief.

It's good to see from Alvarez, but it also came against the B-squad for the Tigers (actually closer to the C-squad). He still needs an out pitch to have any kind of sustained success. Allowing only 2 HR is great but he can't rely on that to keep his ERA below 4 in the future.

Doesn't make me feel better, I just don't think Alvarez is very good. I don't think that's a controversial statement. And the pitching staff put up 11.7 WAR this year compared to 7.5 last year so I'd say they definitely improved in 2013. Although with the money and resources they spent, obviously they were looking for a much bigger improvement.
