Jays after A's Anderson?

Interesting notion except that he's a serial injury, probably more of an injury risk than Josh Johnson. But we do get a group rate on elbow surgeries, so maybe it's not such a risk. If we sign or acquire enough guys with a high risk of re-injury, one of them is bound to pan out, right?

Speaking of elbow injuries. I have a gut feeling that AA will pursue Gavin Floyd as well. Obviously, nothing guaranteed since he likely won't be back until after the all-star break. However, he seems like a guy that AA has always been after and I could see AA acquiring him as an insurance policy late in the year.

If we get enough injury plagued pitchers, eventually a handful of them will be able to pitch for most of the season. Maybe we should go with an 8 man rotation to ease their workload

It would be another shot in the dark at an ace pitcher, something AA loves. Something that will most likely fail. Rather have 5 Mark Buehrles.

I would rather have no Mark Buehrles, at least at his current salary.

I'd say the Jays already have enough wild cards (Does Dickey return to Cy Young form? Does Morrow give you 150+ innings of 2012 form? Do one or more of Hutchison, Nolin, and Stroman prove to be capable major league starters? etc.) If they bring in another starter, it should be someone with a decent track record who has a better than average chance of not getting injured for a good chunk of the season.

I would take a chance on Anderson.

Realistically, how many low injury risk pitchers are available that can pitch in the AL East? The only ones available in free agency are Kuroda and possibly Tanaka.

When he's not on the DL he's solid, but he spends a lot of time on the DL. The last thing we need is another pitcher we can't count on.

The problem is his salary. $8m is a lot of money for a flier on a guy who, over the past four seasons, has averaged the innings total of a reliever. We have holes that need filling.

Ya. Put me on the no thanks bandwagon. Way too many question marks for way too much money.

It's not like Anderson's had shoulder issues or any recurring health problems though. He had TJ and then a stress fracture in his foot. $8 million is a lot but he only needs to pitch half a season to be worth 2 WAR.

I agree C and 2b are more important. But at the same time, the Jays aren't signing McCann or Cano and there's not a lot of teams that are willing to trade those premium position players.

We've definitely got to do something about our catching position before we can worry about our starting rotation. If we head into next season as Arencibia as our starting catcher, AA should definitely be in a hot seat. Pretty much every team in the playoffs this year has a suitable defensive catcher whether average or above average.

With that being said, I'm skeptical about what type of prospect package AA would have to give up to acquire Brett Anderson. When healthy, this guy has some serious talent but we already have another talented injury prone starter in Morrow. Can we afford to have two starters in our rotation next year where we have absolutely no clue how many innings they're going to give us?

Phillips is going to be shopped and traded this winter.. What are the chances we could take on his contract?

The Reds decided a month ago that they will shop Brandon Phillips this winter and intend to trade him, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today (via Twitter). While there are several contending clubs with questions at second base to address this offseason, finding an attractive deal for Phillips could prove to be challenging.

Didn't AA have interest in him before?

I'm not anti-stats but at what point do we stop worrying about guys value through WAR if he can only pitch half a damn season?!

Agree with everything you say. AA should be in the hot seat if he does not upgrade the Catching Position, and trades for an another injury prone starter. This team can not afford an another injury prone starter if it is serious about contending in 2014. We do not need an another Brandon Morrow.

We take Phillips but only as a pure salary dump. They can have Kawasaki and one of Drabek/Hutch/Nolin.
