OT:Tanaka to Yankees. $155 mil/7 years

MLB is trying to put a 20 million dollar bid limit on player negotiation rites from Japan. Then from all teams that are tied as highest bidders, the teams with worst records will be given consideration over the power houses like Texas and NYY...... Then the Japanese Player can choose a team out of the qualifying teams.
This was done to give small markets a chance against the big guys.... however this is not going to cleanly for the Japanese teams, who stand to lose millions.
if it happens, Jays with their bad 2013 record and an ownership that can likely offer 20 million, might be favourites in the Tanaka sweepstakes.
well, thats what i figure atleast.

He looks to have better stuff and better Japanese numbers than both Iwakuma and Kuroda who are damn good MLB SPs. And he's 25.
AA probably regrets not going all-in on Darvish. Tanaka, at least to me, represents a pretty safe gamble. A 25 year old SP who could easily be a #2 and all you have to do is give up money? Seems like a no-brainer.
But who knows with this regime. They seem keen on taking the long odds when they gamble.

I think you've combined the two possibilities, when I don't think either one is set in stone as of yet.
It's either the lowest winning percentage of the winning bidders OR the player's choice between the winning bidders, it can't be both. Unless it's the bottom 3 or bottom 5 or something the player gets to choose from.
What I'd like to know is if the player gets to negotiate with all teams before choosing, or if it is the same thing where you choose the team to negotiate with.
There's also talk of Tanaka's team waiting to post him, since they only stand to get $20M and not $50-60M like they were probably expecting, and may want to get another year or two out of him now.
Either way, I'd put the chances of seeing Tanaka in a Blue Jays uniform in 2014 at less than 1%.

$20 million is still a fortune compared the state of the Japanese league. Hard to turn down, which is why they are even entertaining the offer. They just hit the jackpot with Darvish.

The Rakuten Golden Eagles didn't get anything for Darvish. A few weeks ago, they thought they would be getting around $50 million if they posted Tanaka. Now they are faced with getting $20 million. A lot of money, for sure, but it might not be enough to justify giving up Tanaka earlier than they have to.
NPB is not some bush league operation. There are lots of players making millions of dollars over there.
It's just speculation, but there is some chatter that Rakuten may not post Tanaka this year. Seems to be backed up in part by their vote against the new rules. In the end they may end up taking the bid, but it's not a sure thing.

They can post him this year, or next year. I don't see why they would do it right away. They can get one more year out of him and almost certainly still get the $20M posting fee next season. It's not like there's much risk. If it was an open system like when the Ham Fighters sold Darvish, then yeah, the fee could have dropped from $51M to maybe $30M if he had a bad year or got injured. But something extremely unlikely would have to happen for nobody in MLB to bid $20M next season.

It was done to save team Owners money. Look at it this way; this just saved whoever wants Tanaka about ~$30 million of non-contract expense.

That depends on whether any team wins exclusive negotiating rights or if it an open field, but I don't think either of those are true.
Since it looks like an open field, I don't see any way that $30 mil isn't going right into the contract. The only thing this really changes is that the Yankees can't avoid the luxury tax.

Trading Sanchez and/or Stroman should happen only if we are 100% sure we are making the playoffs (around trade deadline) to bolster the chances of winning a world series. Right now, it's just too risky to use them to get a starter only to see this team not put things together or get decimated by injuries again.
The only option in my opinion is to go hard after Tanaka and hope he becomes that top end starter. It only costs money, and if it doesn't work out, then begin a sell-off of all the vets.

People forget the media coverage behind Tanaka can easily pay for the bidding and posting and expand the fan base into an already large Asian population in the Toronto especially. You could sell seats, TV time and more. Imagine the coverage Darvish vs Tanaka would get on the network.

Sanchez and Stroman shouldn't be traded at all. You need an ace and up-through-the-system is more likely than Rogers paying for Tanaka.

We did not bid for Tanaka's services. That's already been established. We seem to be keying on one of the bigger FA pitchers left, like Jimenez.

Agreed, gotta think it is Jimenez or Santana that they have in their sights. Landing at least one of those 2 is the hard part...

Jeff Passan @JeffPassan 5m
One official involved in the Masahiro Tanaka bidding believes the winning contract is going to fall somewhere in the six-year, $120M range.

so it'll likely be 7 and 140'ish then. Too expensive.
