OT: Garza to the Brewers, 4/52m

Source: Garza in agreement with #Brewers, four years, $52M, pending physical.

Jeff Passan ‏@JeffPassan 26s
Ervin Santana and Ubaldo Jimenez cannot be happy that Matt Garza got just $52M over four years without draft-pick compensation attached.

Can't wait for the,

"We didn't think the price tag was right for any of the pitchers on the market. We'll explore options via trade"

followed by

"The price for starting pitching was way too high via trade, we're confident that our current rotation will turn it around".

Good. I didn't particularly want Garza, given that he has spent significant time on the DL in each of the past two seasons (the stress reaction/fracture scares me there), but as Passan states that's below what many expected him to receive...MLBTR had a projection of 4 years, $60m. That's a big shoe to drop post-Tanaka, and we might see Santana and Jimenez sign fairly soon.

Good deal. Wish the Jays were in on that; only 4 years, only 13M and no draft pick lost. Plus Garza has had some of his best numbers when Navarro was catching him in Tampa and Chicago.

But i wont be too upset if we land Jimenez hopefully to a good deal not the 17-20M he wants. I do not want Santana - just do not think he will transition well for us.

The way this off-season is shaping up and how the Jays are talking; I would have rather offered a QO for Johnson if he was deemed healthy by our staff. Rather give him a 1 year deal at 14M than sign one of the remaining guys long term to an expensive deal.

Johnson on a 1 year deal offers more flexibility than these deals. We all know he wont pitch 200 IP in 2014 but the Jays staff held him in high regard when they made the trade. I am sure they did years of scouting and gave up a lot for him a year ago. I hope they didnt flush that away based off of one year; would be bad asset managing - but hey opinions can change - better to correct it now than latter.

But from an outsider - Johnson with guys like Drabek, Hutch, and Stroman could provide some value...

Dickey
Buherle
Morrow
Johnson
Happ
Hutch
Drabek
Stroman
Romero

Not so bad if some 2-3 guys step up and give you 100 quality IP from your 4-7 guys.

This upsets me, I liked Garza. 4/52 mill, that's like 2 years of Tanaka!

That is a great deal if Garza were not so injury prone. Perhaps we should look at it as he only got $52M over four years because he is so injury prone and there are some serious concerns for a team like the Angels not to get him. As much as I like him, with the time line the Jays are in, Ubaldo is a better fit as he's been a horse over the years.

As of a week ago, Ervin Santana still was seeking a four-year deal in the $60M range. Chances of him getting anything close growing slimmer.

I like Ubaldo the most of the available pitchers but he's far from a horse. 36 mlb pitchers logged 200+ innings last year and Ubaldo doesn't come close (59th for innings pitched in the MLB). Both Dickey and Buerhle logged over 200+ innings last year. So did Ervin Santana. You may be thinking of the Colorado version of Ubaldo as a horse. That was some time ago.

If the Jays want an inning eating "horse" then Arroyo is the man to target. He's a disaster waiting to happen in the AL east so that shouldn't happen even if the price is right.

We better be inking Ubaldo if we are going to be letting Garza sign for cheap.

Well AA can't say "we didn't want to go over 5 years" and 13 mil a year for Garza is a good deal. What is the front office waiting for?

Reminds me of the Gil Meche signing from way back in the day

I really only see this ending well for Garza

Garza is much, much better than Meche ever was in the years prior to that contract being signed.

It wasn't a comment on talent

I don't see this signing helping the Brewers anymore than Gil Meche helped the Royals

Come on, WTF. He took 4/52m thats 13m a year. Thats not even that bad, for a quality pitcher that will be at lowest the 3rd starter in your rotation. Fire AA bandwagon just got a 170lbs heavier.

What a bizarre off-season for pitching. First we see Fister practically given away, later a guy who's never thrown a pitch in the bigs gets a massive deal, then shortly after a proven guy signs for a surprisingly low amount.

I'm not a huge fan of Garza, but I would have jumped at that price/term. Surprised/disappointed AA wasn't in on that action.
Nick Nurse recounting his first meeting with Kawhi:
“We could have gone forever. (Raptors management) kept knocking on the door and I was like, ‘A couple more minutes.’ Because we were really into it."

AA had an interview on the Fan where he talked about being able to sign a SP right now. He also said they have medical reports about some of them that would scare people away (info casual people don't know). I'm paraphrasing obviously.

It was probably Garza they were scared of. I mean, he has a screw in his elbow.

Tom ‏@Haudricourt 4m
I was assured again that no red flags came up on #Brewers physical on Matt Garza. Just working out final contract language.

Adam McCalvy ‏@AdamMcCalvy 3m
Hearing Garza's 4-yr deal with #Brewers guarantees $50mm, with $4mm more available in incentives and a vesting option for 5th year at $13mm
