Ervin Santana now a Bargain

Post#1 » by Blue Jays » Sat Mar 8, 2014 1:45 am

bleacherreport.com

Ervin Santana is now looking for a 1 year deal to get into spring action as soon as possible.

Kansas is not interested in bringing him back even on a 1 year deal now. They want the pick i guess. Which means the Jays are in best shape to land Santana if they chose, as Jays would NOT have to give a 1st rounder like other teams. Jays give the 2nd round pick because of last season's record.

Best part is, if AA gets Santana on a 1 year deal. Then next season Jays can give him a Qualifying offer again, like Kansas did now. Meaning draft pick return or he resigns likely again.

At this point it makes too much sense for Jays to atleast get involved.

...and we think RA Dickey gave up a lot of homers...

The launching pad that is Rogers Centre would be awful for Santana, not to mention playing in the AL East.

i thought the Jays shoulda signed him last offseason.

yeh he gives homers but he is also very effective and an inning eater. its much better than giving multiple years to Ubaldo. Santana was the best pitcher on the market. The draft pick is why he has no job today.

1 year deal with the option to qualify offer next offseason.

why not?

Spoke about this today with a friend that he'd go this route. Jays have no excuse now

Which is why I'd dread the idea of him signing a Jimenez type deal.

But as a one year insurance policy, with the hope that he does a respectable holding down a spot at the back end of the rotation, it's worth the risk as far as I'm concerned.

This is really going to make the Jays organization look bad. The rotation is in shambles. They need two starters and practically all their options for those two spots are either struggling or hurt. Romero had two good innings against minor leaguers and we're throwing a party. The Jays signing Santana is about as close to a no brainer as you can get at this point. I agree he will regress in the AL East and gopher-itis might be an issue with him coming to Skydome, but it's a one year deal for a 200 IP starter in a season when the team has to make the playoffs. It's better than counting on Romero or hoping guys coming off TJS are going to magically turn the team around. It was one thing when he wanted 3-4 years, but one year? The deal should already be signed.

With that said, Santana will sign elsewhere and the Jays will stand pat, but this time, there might be some criticism headed their way. They won't be able to weasel out of it by saying "his demands were too high" or "we liked internal options better". They practically have no crutch to use here. Santana will sign elsewhere and the media will (or at least should) have a field day. If it exposes Beeston and Rogers, I'm all for it.

Rogers /Beeston should be criticized if Ervin lands elsewhere on a 1-year-deal.

Like you said, it's not like our rotation in ST has been great, we can use all the help in the world right now.

With the talk of him wanting to go to a "good offensive team" (and then Rosenthal's reference to TOR in his article), it's almost as if this Santana leak was directed specifically at the Blue Jays to get them involved.

Good luck getting Rogers to spend the money, though, even if he is only asking for 1 year now.

A day after Anthopoulos announced that two spots could still be up for grabs, no less.

The team's position has now become ridiculous to defend. If we can get Santana on a 1 year deal it must be done. We're in a shambles right now and the season could be over before it begins with this rotation.

If he gave us 200 innings and performed with a 4.00 ERA, as his xFIP suggests he would regress to, then he could honestly be the #2/#3 starter on this team.

We currently have the worst starting rotation in baseball. Internal improvements won't cut it.

I think it could be the opposite. If I were in Rogers position I would flock to give Santana a one year deal. He would be comming in with something to prove (similar lowry contract year situation?) it would also save Rogers so much face with regards to this past off season. Pitching to the fans that they were able to get a teir 1ish pitcher would be a great marketing point.

With that said if they don't give Santana a contract I think the higher ups have given up on the team as it is.

If Anthopolous lets him sign somewhere else it will show that he was full of crap on his "length of term" excuse. He wants someone on a 1 or 2 year deal, no excuses anymore.

I will be livid if the Jays let Baltimore sign him.

Would you rather have Josh Johnson or Ervin Santana for one year at the QO?

"Ervin Santana is talking to the Blue Jays and Orioles about possible deals in the range of $14 million for one year, and could have a deal soon with one of those two teams or possibly a third team in the NL that is still on the fringe of the talks.

Toronto and Baltimore are the clear favorites now, with a deal likely being struck in the next day or two."

AA better be offering him 14.2 million. Let him sign for a bit more than QO.

And he better have Joey Bats, Edwin, and Reyes on the phone with him early this morning.

Johnson's the risk/reward one, Santana should be comfortably mediocre in the AL East. Normally I'd go for the upside, but Johnson is just so damned prone to injury.

This also makes for an intriguing update of our past fun with arbitration. We'd surrender our 2nd rounder, but if Santana has a good season we'd likely QO him and receive back a comp round pick, upgrading the draft slot modestly.

Honestly, this seems like a no brainer for the Jays and AA. 1 year deal for one of the best starting pitchers in free agency this year has very little risk attached since we're only surrendering a 2nd rounder. Also the possibility of upgrading the pick to a 1st rounder next year is very intriguing.

If we don't sign Santana it will be entirely because of the constraints placed by Rogers. Santana wants a good hitting team....we have a good hitting team. He'll also be surrounded by some of the best Dominican players in the league...

Get this done please.
