Jays lost money last season? Forbes gets hornswoggled

According to Forbes, the big market teams all had their value estimates raised because of big TV deals, but somehow the Jays, though adding a million fans (who probably paid an average of $30-plus per ticket), lost money. The Rogers three card monte scam works again, TV profitability for the Jays neatly buried in the Rogers cable side of the books rather than in the Jays books.

Rogers are a bunch of shysters, trying to justify to the uninformed fan why they haven't gone deeper into the coffers. When they clearly can and should, instead they are pulling the wool over peoples eyes, the fans deserve better.

By the way, the Jays have the 10th highest payroll in MLB. All of the nine teams with larger payrolls, save the Phillies and maybe the Angels, have legitimate playoff aspirations.

I wonder why Rogers would do such a thing....

Under its current iteration, MLB’s revenue sharing program looks something like this:

● Every team in the majors pays in 31% of their net local revenue, and then that money is divided up and equally distributed to every team. Since large-market teams will have much greater local revenues than small market teams, this already puts small market teams in the black.
● On top of this, a large chunk of MLB’s central fund (which are acquired through things like national broadcasts) is set aside to be allocated to teams based on their revenues.

With $218 million in revenue, that loss is next to nothing. A little creative accounting between Rogers divisions and a $14 million loss can be flipped to a $14 million profit with a few keystrokes.

ESPN should do a story on Rogers and try to expose them

Investigate how much money they actually have been raking in over the years and where the Jays rank in terms of most valuable.
