What has happened to this guy?

He just hasn't been the same after that injury from last year. Didn't he get off to a good start before his ankle injury?

Career stats:

.290 BA
.341 OBP
.438 SLG
.779 OPS

So far this season he has accumulated the following stats:

59 AB
.186 BA
.238 OBP
.305 SLG
.543 OPS

Well below his career average, and has only 1 SB. Is this a player who's on the decline?

Jose is this what we get from your for 16 million?? Btw, that jumps to 22 million for each of the next 3 seasons. :nonono:

Must be nice to have all those millions and do jack ****!

We got fleeced by the Marlins. They probably knew JJ had no ulnar collateral ligament left and that Reyes was a depreciating asset. Jay's are left holding the bag.

Reyes has only had 59 at bats this year. Those numbers could easily jump soon with his abilty , however, he is probably playing like hes afraid to get hurt. No way of proving that but there hasn't been any situation since he has returned where he has sprinted %100.

EE and Lawrie's numbers have started to increase after a slow start but yeah Reyes hasn't looked good so far.

His contract alone is the reason he should be the first shopped. It's brutal.

A player who relies on speed entering his 30s. This could end up being a Carl Crawford type contract, if it isn't already. Trade him the first chance we get, but knowing AA, we're stuck with him through the contract.

Jose Reyes will be fine... you shouldn't worry about his salary because you're not paying it. I always laugh at people who care about a persons contract in a non cap league. Seriously guys, these are the contracts we NEED to have to win. Jumping off a cliff for no reason and then using the contract as a justification is stupid.

Would you prefer that he go to the Yankees who would GLADLY pay that money to Jose Reyes to replace Jeter and then watch him torch us and rub it in our faces. Don't be ridiculous guys, he's making money akin to a star player because he IS one. It's not working out right away but he's the type of guy you need to win. He's 30 guys, not 35, there's a huge difference, just relax.

Are you seriously coming here and telling us not to worry about payroll? Do you follow this team and its owner?

He's a defensively declining and injury prone SS getting paid about $20M a season for the next four years. I think there is reason to worry.

Why yes I do.

That's exactly it, blame the ownership. Don't get upset over the payroll, they aren't getting paid above market value. That's the going rate of a Jose Reyes or Robinson Cano or a VERNON WELLS who's getting paid $21 mil to sit on his couch and eat doritos.

That's the nature of the market. You have effectively decided that because Rogers decided not to spend as much as they are able to that you should react according to the expectations they have set. No my friend. If you keep that attitude about it, get used to losing because we'll always be outspent by the Yankees and Red Sox and never get out of the AL East.

Wake up call guys. He's not earning his pay at this moment, but he earned the pay day that he got. It wasn't a fluke. That's what Jose Reyes cost, and if the ownership decides that they're going to try to shoestring budget free agents and whatever else so you're upset that he's taking up a bunch of the pie, maybe try changing your focus to the **** ownership doing what they have to do to compete which is pay those type of salaries and not let it hamstring them.... and furthermore, Jose Reyes will be fine, he will be an integral part of this team if he's healthy.

Turn our focus to the ownership? Seriously, I don't think you read this forum much.

I think there is reason to worry because of that contract and his injury issues, but I think he can still easily be moved. He's a shortstop for one, even if he's not as great defensively anymore. He also has star power/name built from his elite years. I mean if Wells can be moved, I'm sure we can easily move Reyes and maybe even get back something useful.

I also think he will pick it up offensively. He's only hitting .191 but it really seems like he's done better than that (if that makes any sense).

This is all predicated on the assumption that this team wants to rebuild. If not, you keep him. It's not like there is anyone else in the system to replace him.

maybe it's just me, but Jose Reyes looks pretty all star'ish these past 5 games here. making magic happen up top the lineup. stealing bags. going yard. baserunning moves paying off, playing d.

dunno just what I've seen the past week :)

He's certainly been playing some defense, just of the poor variety.

Far from being an all star, and he will never be one again. Can you honestly tell me this guy is worth 22 million US to put up the numbers he is putting up right now?

This really pisses me off! and don't use injuries as an excuse. He has had time to recover.

He needs to step it up BIG TIME!

Any update on Reyes? Seems like every week we have a player go down for a game or three with niggling injuries.

Gibbons says that he told Reyes before the game he was going to have a maintenance day off, but he looked like he kind of hurt himself in the previous game.

We'll only know the truth when the next game starts.

Check that: In the post game video when Gibby is asked about Reyes he says that he could have played in an emergency; which again implies that he was banged up.

He also says he may have to keep Rasmus out a week and put him on the DL; but in the article Rasmus says he only needs a couple of days off and the doctor says it is nothing too bad (similar to the injury he suffered earlier but on the opposite leg). He re-aggravated the injury stretching for the pujols ball in the sixth,
