Okay, so stats by position rather than by name. It's not more meaningful than player stats, but I like seeing how it all shakes out positionally.

Obviously the starting pitching spots are pretty obviously 1 guy (except Morrow/Happ), although I ranked by performance rather than current rotational order just so you can think about what's acceptable out of a first, second, etc...

I used ESPN's positional games played numbers to account for how to divide up multi-position players' stats. That means the percentages of a player per for positions are a little warped by mid-game changes, but it's the best solution I could come up with, short of actually scouring each boxscore for the position the player was in for each AB, which would be insane. Also, FIP is an averaged approximation for the relievers and the Morrow/Happ spot, but should be close enough.

Code: Select all

Fld   PA   OBP   SLG   OPS
C-   149   346   410   756
1B   153   344   450   794
2B   149   299   355   654
SS   138   250   279   529
3B   140   294   432   727
LF   160   356   515   871
CF   146   308   514   822
RF   147   514   522   937
DH   127   358   449   807

Code: Select all

Ptch   IP/G   ERA   WHIP   FIP
SP1   6.7   1.91   1.17   3.04
SP2   5.9   4.17   1.27   3.10
SP3   5.9   5.01   1.48   4.26
SP4   5.0   4.80   1.43   4.67
SP5   4.6   5.01   1.67   4.12
RHR   2.2   5.33   1.59   4.69
LHR   1.0   4.11   1.26   3.28

Obviously our OF is baller, our MI is horrifying and our RHR is the surprising disaster.

If McGowan/Happ/Stroman can start filling the 4th and 5th slots with more than 5IP/game, I think we'll see the relief problem correct, especially with a Janssen return.

I also think, allowing for league-average luck, potential increases from the under performers (Reyes, EE, Dickey) can counter balance the potential slowdowns of the hot hands (OF and Buehrle).

If we could just find someone half serviceable for 2B, honestly at this point Getz with a high .600's OPS might even be enough—although I kind of want to gag when I type that—just not the Goins/Diaz .200/.200/.400 club.

That's a good way of looking at it. Find the average for each position slot then see who is above or below because it changes every year.

We can only expect the bullpen to get better when Janssen is back, and I think we can expect better numbers from Reyes and Getz than whatever we had out there the first 3-4 weeks of the season.

I was looking at team stats and wanted to compare how we are doing compared to other teams, also using basic stats.

Hitting

Runs - 5th
HR - 2nd
BB - 6th
SB - 25th
SB% - 8th

Our team is surprisingly up there as far as offense goes, even with the question marks in the lineup and injuries. What stands out this year compared to others I think, at this point, is the amount of runs scored compared to other seasons, you will notice that with more walks as a team, we seem to be hitting more home runs with runners on base for once.

Pitching

ERA - 25th
QS - 25th
BB - 2nd
BAA - 20th
Hits - 16th
WHIP - 25th

Stop walking so many batters and we might have something here , otherwise, our hitting will go to waste. Also need starters to go deeper into games overall, like they have the last week or so.

Yeah the walks are a killer. Convert the excess into balls in play and everything gets better, except hit total probably gets a bit worse. Although one could make the case that fewer walks can secondarily lower that too.

Having Happ in the rotation isn't helping. We don't need another McGowan.

Well according to the original post we need an ERA under 5.00 from our 5th starter and McGowan and Happ have done that over there careers. However with the #1 pitchers putting up an ERA under 2 combined right now, Dickey is outmatched and doesn't leave much room for our 2 through 5 starters to fail.

If Beurhle were having an average Beurhle season start we'd be the worst team in the division and worst in pitching all over the place.

Cheers. I hate BR's UI and rarely use it, but that's definitely helpful. But you can't take away my number fiddling or I'd actually get some work done and I can't have that. :D
