IIRC, someone (Beeston or AA) said that if people showed up, they would continue to spend. We did our part last year, but I'm curious to knwo if we are doing it this year.

Hate that rationale. Put a product on the field that is worth spending our money on. I already pay these **** for four different channels to watch my local team.

it's no wonder the attendance would drop this year considering they basically kept the same team as last years' bum-squad.

Why would they expect MORE people to show up to a team that proved they weren't worthy last year?

I think attendance generally goes up as the season progresses. I imagine at the conclusion of the season it will be pretty comparable.

That's not entirely true. Last year averaged about 30k in Aug/Sep, they were 31.8ish at this point and dropped back, but that's hardly surprising. It's mostly that late September crowds against non-NYY/BOS teams look like April numbers.

However, with the games in September likely to actually matter, I don't know what kind of crowds to expect, other than better. The Jays need something like 36-37k a game from here on out to catch last year's huge increase over '12. That seems quite likely, barring a sudden and dramatic collapse out of the race.

Considering in the last 10 years, the closest we've been to the playoffs on July 31st is 5.0 games back of the WC (2005), I think some nice late summer weather and meaningful September Baseball could actually pack the joint, but the May/June dichotomy will push it back as far as possible. I think it's a little bit fool me once, fool me twice situation where people are still waiting to see if this team has one more gigantic egg to lay on all our faces, but at some point the gate numbers will dramatically dovetail from previous seasons 'cause we'll pull 35-45 in games we've historically drawn 15-20.

For a little perspective on the attendance, here are the last 5 years of per game attendance, including 2014, for the AL in a handy-dandy graph.



The 2nd WC, along with NYY and BOS regression (yes even with the WS win) are really doing some good work for TOR and BAL. MIN's new stadium hype is gone, the Rangers support was always soft, but they won't fall too far.

I think we me might actually be trending towards a reasonable second tier and I'd attribute that to the playoff expansion. There'll be NYY, BOS, and now LAA all on their own, but TEX, BAL, TOR, and IMO eventually HOU and CHW will sit not that far below them. Tier 2 are the teams that can waffle between looking like 1's and looking like 3's based on performance and expectations, but the second WC really stabilizes the year-to-year chances of looking competitive. Nobody is going to reap more rewards from more playoff spots than the 2nd tier group. The difference between having to look like a 95 win team in 2010 to pique your fan base's interest once they're despondent and having to look like an 85 win team to do the same now can likely stabilize the returns these teams see to an almost ridiculous degree. IMO, we'll have more playoff expansion pretty quickly 'cause there are a majority of ownership groups that are going to just love what this does to their bottom lines.

Watching all the other contenders making significant moves during this deadline makes me want the Blue Jays to add someone too but what position? If Morrow and Delabar can come back healthy, our bullpen would be stacked. When Edwin, Lawrie and Lind comes back (assuming within the next few weeks), our infield would be stacked. Our outfielders are more than capable. Our rotation is looking pretty solid with the addition of Stroman. There doesn't seem to be a position that we really need to upgrade plus if we do, we would have to give up either Stroman, Sanchez, or other top prospects and for what? a few weeks of rental?

Catcher is a position we could definitely upgrade but it's unlikely since Navarro has already established a rapport with all our SPs.

The Jays could very clearly upgrade the rotation and bullpen. But that's going to cost money that Rogers apparently doesn't have available for this organization.

But haven't you heard Bob McCown tell everyone the team doesn't make money?
