Gibbons has been starting Goins and letting him face righties and lefties so I'm almost certain Kawasaki will be sent down. Lawrie starts at 3B, Goins at 2B, and Francisco at 1B until Edwin gets back.

Dumb decision, as a Kawasaki/Tolleson platoon is the best internal option (until the Francisco to 3B/Lawrie to 2B move happens), but this organization has a love for Goins that no one can understand. I don't think I want to understand it either. His glove is not going to compensate for his bat.

It's sad that Delabar or Santos still can't pitch well enough in AAA to beat out Rob Rasmussen for a callup.

It will be most interesting if the team wants to make a long-term deal with Lawrie buying out his arb years how both sides would assess his value. He's not realized his potential, nor has he even progressed to the level we would have expected at this point, yet he is a primo defensive player - at third base anyways - and has great upside. Whether he realizes that or not is another matter. Then, there is his health, a propensity to injuries that might amount to serious bad luck - it's not all because of his past tendency to go crashing into things. His thumb injuries suggest a possible batting approach issue, which should be curable, but oblique injuries are another matter. He would have every reason to consider his own vulnerability and leave some money on the table to lock in financial security and stay in Toronto where he will always earn some endorsement money by virtue of being a Canadian regular with a strong, somewhat marketable personality.

Like I said, this would be a tough one for both sides, and maybe going to arbitration with him is the better path.

Well said. That is one of the reasons i would have made the Juan Francisco for Chase Headley trade back in July when it was offered. However, maybe Rogers did not give the blessing to AA because of Headley's salary. Fact of the matter is this guy's health is an issue, regardless of his marketable personality, etc. I would not lock him up long-term. Better yet- i would even look at another long-term third base option in the off-season. Lawrie should be the second base/third base utility part-time player, because he is on the DL for three months anyways. Jays need another long-term option at third base because this guy cannot be simply relied upon to stay healthy. I would even accept trade offers for this guy, and deal him in case another team gives a good offer. Third year in a row this guy is going to be on the DL for an oblique strain.

Well, that's the least of everyone's worries. I look at the system, and we have a fair number of guys like Burns, Opitz, Nay, especially Nay, who might at the very least play a better third base and hit for higher average than the Tollesons and Kawasakis of the world. I'm projecting a couple of years down the line, of course.
