For better or worse, the Jays are bringing up Daniel Norris now, also possibly Graveman and/or Nolin among pitchers. Gose, of course, coming too, plus Johnson, Goins, Mayberry.

Calling up Norris (particularly so that he can pitch in the bullpen) and Graveman is silly...we're going to need those 40-man spots in the offseason to keep all of our prospects away from the Rule 5 draft. Even by our standards that's short-sighted.

I agree, won't move the needle for this season, and could expose prospects to the Rule 5. I just wonder who is going to be vulnerable. By my count, we had a spot on the 40-man roster for Mayberry since Neil Wagner just had TJ surgery and presumably will be moved to the 60-day DL. If Steve Delabar isn't called up for September, his days as a Jay are likely done. Colt Hynes and Matt Hague are easily dropped, likely Mastroianni as well. By the time winter rolls around, Rasmus may be dropped once he isn't tendered. Rob Rasmussen is marginal, too. No one else at BUF has to be protected, IMO, and maybe Burns at NH. Dwight Smith and Shane Opitz at DUN, and then who? Taylor Cole? Depending on whom the Jays tender or pick up options on, there could be more (see Janssen, Lind, Francisco, Morrow, etc.). I could see someone like Nolin being traded before he is dropped from the 40-man, and Mayberry appears to be on a show-me trial and if he doesn't justify a roster spot this winter, he could be exposed to the Rule 5 as well.
My suspicion is that if we're not breaking up the core, firing the manager, or replacing the GM and president, we're going status quo and selling tickets using our young pitching staff, claiming that with these young guys, the Jays will finally have the pitching staff to make the playoff, and maybe make one acquisition by trade or free agency to deal with say, 2B. Sure, that a long-shot theory for the hardcore fans crunching the payroll numbers, but you can easily imagine a collage of Hutchinson/Stroman/Sanchez/Norris being used to sell tickets to the casual fans this winter.
I'm sure the marketing guys would love that - these four young pitchers are engaging personalities. Stroman has his little-man-big-heart narrative, Sanchez is the killer behind the sweet kid mask, and Norris is, well, a walking story line with his VW van, surfing, counter-culture personality.

As long as it doesn't mean we have to lose valuable guys off the 40-man and doesn't impact our years of control over him, I like the move. Get him a quick taste out of the bullpen in the hopes that it will serve him well for next year.

GM's with their jobs on the line always scare me. How AA handles the 40-man roster will be interesting this winter.

Neil Wagner has been DFA'd. So that's a spot on the 40-man.

Part of me is thinking that the root of all these aggressive promotions this year is that AA knows that the payroll is going to be cut going in to 2015 and he's rushing a few of the specs to see if they might be cheap fill ins for next year. That way he has at least a small look at areas that he may be able to fill internally.
Hope I'm wrong, but I just get a bad feeling that the money won't be coming back. Rogers has done this before so it's not like these are uncharted waters.

ON PTS, Elliotte reported that Sergio Santos was on his way to AA.

We're approaching nearly two years where the club hasn't invested any money outside of arbitration and contractually built-in options and salary increases. It's really not a secret anymore despite what Beeston and AA have been spouting off to the entirely Rogers-owned media.

I'm glad to see Pompey getting a call up... makes plenty of sense with him needing to go on the 40 man prior to the rule 5.
Don't really see the point in using 40 man spots now on Norris or Graveman though. You'd think neither are likely to break camp with the team next season.

If not for the Dickey trade, we'd be bringing up Syndergaard, too. Then again, he's a bit stuck right now in Vegas. Mets weren't sure they could find a 40-man spot for him this month. Actually, Norris got to the majors before two members of the Lansing 3. Justin Nicolino had a stellar season for Miami's system, but has played the whole year, I believe, in the AA Southern League. He's 22. Had he remained in the Jays system, he probably would have made the majors months ago. So either other teams are too conservative, or AA has decided to roll the dice on a youth movement that could blow up in his face.

I don't know if I'd call Nicolino's season "stellar" due to his terrible K rate (81Ks in 170 IP), which is a pretty severe regression from previous seasons and probably explains why he hasn't yet been promoted despite otherwise good results.
