Probably. Hopefully not (I loathe trading things of value for bullpen arms), but probably.

Marco Estrada?

Okay, Estrada does some things well, but he's an extreme flyball pitcher who is thus massively homer prone. He's also going to be paid a fair bit, given that he's second-year arb eligible. This is baffling.

Blue Jays have zero need for another fringe starter/mediocre bullpen arm. There better be another move coming.

He did have better luck limiting homers as a reliever, but that was a small sample size. Also, he'll get $4m+ in arb, which is a healthy chunk of coin for a guy who might be fairly solid in relief and, as mentioned above, was a candidate to get non-tendered.

If he's dumping salary, he's doing it badly. Estrada won't be cheap for what he provides. Looks more like he was salivating over that K/BB and failed to notice that he's the Mexican John Wasdin.

The nicest thing I can say about Estrada is that, in the right park, he could be a well-above-average starting pitcher.

The problem is that said park would be one in, I dunno, not the AL East.

On its face, it's probably one of the worse trades of the AA era. Hard to justify it from a value/team-building perspective as Estrada is nothing more than a Villanueva type starter/reliever and Lind is one of the better bats against RHP in the league (although obviously one with limited value because he can't hit lefties and can't play the field). Cost saving is no doubt a part of this.

It looks like the Jays might end up running cheap platoons all over the field next season (Smoak/Valencia at DH, Dirks/Mayberry in LF, Gose/Pillar in CF?). It's not a bad idea in theory, but it's hard to see how those specific combinations are going to get them where they want to go in 2015.

I don't get this move. The Jays would have been better off not picking up Lind's option and spending Estrada's expected arbitration figure on a better free agent reliever. Estrada will probably be in the Carlos Villanueva role, and that's not worth trading one of the best hitters on the team just for a $3M savings. I would have been fine with even a late-inning relief candidate with 2-3 years of control. This is really bad.

If he's dumping salary, he is doing a bad job, and if he feel this is Lind's value, then he's also doing a bad job. There's no real positive spin here. Bashing the front office or doing something the front office deems embarrassing has now cost the Jays Lind and Escobar for practically nothing. Being run by corporate owners is probably the worst thing in sports.

I absolutely agree. I am really puzzled by this move. Every year i am puzzled by this team in the off-season. Maybe another move is coming, but on the surface Lind for Estrada is a clear win for the Brewers. I would have just kept Lind for 7.5 M. This is not even a good salary dump. A bad trade by AA. I have been a big critic of AA, and this move will add to the criticism.

And we're still going to be paying a lot of money to middling 5th/6th starters as it stands. If we're trying to shave payroll in some areas to spend elsewhere and thus remain competitive, those are precisely the sorts of players that we cannot afford.
