Nelson Cruz over Melky... Why not

Bleacher Report just said experts are estimating Nelson Cruz will settle for a 3 year deal at about 15 million per. This is because he is 34 years old and has a PED history.
So why dont the Jays atleast make a run at him instead of signing Melky at 50-60 million. Then put him in LF or DH.

sounds good to me
SS Reyes (S)
RF Bautista (R)
1B Encarnacion (R)
LF Cruz (R)
C Martin (R)
3B Lawrie (R)
DH Smoak (S)
CF Pompey (S)
2B Izturis (S)
5-9 is interchangeable to spread out the righties and switch hitters.

He makes the most sense to me at this point if we aren't resigning Cabrera

I don't think anyone would be against a 3 year deal with 15 mil per, just whether or not Seattle would top the dollar amount

Why not both? Jays seem to be committed to winning with the signing of Martin... Melky in LF and Cruz as DH...
SS Reyes
LF Cabrera
RF Bautista
1B Encarnicion
DH Cruz
3B Lawrie
C Martin
2B Travis (hopefully an upgrade)
CF Pompey
I know it is wishful thinking. But apparently they were hard after Martinez to be their DH and finished in second. At the same time Martin was their "number 1 target" in the off-season. So it sounds like they were going after both Martin to catch and Martinez to DH. Cruz is available at a cheaper deal to be a great DH. Should be interesting to see what the Jays do.
In my opinion the Jays are playing hard ball with Melky. They gave him a standing three year deal offer of X amount (39 mil to 45 mil) and told him take it or leave it. They know that Melky probably cant do much better and if he can they have no problem letting him find out, take another deal and recouping a 1st round pick. The market for Melky and Cruz too is difficult to gauge. Sub-par fielding OFs with great bats coming off good season with a PED history and the loss of a draft pick if you sign them. Should be interesting. I think AA is playing this one pretty well. Have Melky come in at your price which seems like it is very likely or let him walk. Melky is in a great situation in Toronto, has friends, they can be competitive and they have a spot at DH for him to rest. I doubt he gets a better offer in terms of a team and money-wise. I am sure that is what AA is gambling. I would love to see him back but if he walks then there are a lot of options out there in FA and the trade market.

Great idea! Both are affordable options. But not sure there would be enough left to address pitching. I am working on a salary spread sheet to see where they are at currently. Will post soon.

Cruz has got a deal with the Mariners. In the face of it, it's 4yr/$57m, but media hasn't confirmed what is guaranteed.

Cruz signed with Seattle?
Edit: I see the Wiretap now. Unfortunate.

He gets about 14.25 mil per on average. Slightly less pay but longer term. so the experts were right. I think thats a great deal for Seattle.

I think Melky might end up in Baltimore now. If so, does that make Aoki our prime target for LF?

We'll be going with cheaper options if the payroll is indeed at $140M this upcoming season.
Aoki will end up being too expensive ( apparently asking for $7-$8 million/year)
