Hypothetical - Votto for Encarnacion?

Votto for Encarnacion: pipe dream or realistic possibility?

Both are 31. Both play 1B/DH. Both are elite hitters. Votto hits for better average and on-base percentage, whereas EE is the better power hitter. Votto hits left-handed (a Jays need) and Encarnacion right.

The key stumbling block would be Votto's 10-year contract. EE would probably need to be extended, but at a lower AAV than Votto, representing a net savings to the Reds. There's also the risk that Votto is no longer an elite hitter after a subpar (for him) season last year.

I probably wouldn't do it because I'm not a fan of these 10-year monster contracts that go to age 40, but it is an intriguing possibility. If I were to make an exception, a player of Votto's calibre would be the one to do it for.

I'd be worried about Votto's nagging injuries and possible decline related to those injuries.

I think you can do better for EE (based on contract). EE has one of the friendliest contracts for a power hitter.

I really like what the jays are doing in the off-season, but there is still a chance that they won't compete (based on recent history). At least they will have the flexibility to tear it down and rebuild if necessary. Votto's contract would be too burdensome. Currently the only contracts that potentially hurt us long term are Reyes and Martin.

It is no accident that we went for Donaldson (4 years of salary control) over Panda (100 million).

There's not a snowballs chance in hell I'd even consider that deal.

That'd be terrible for us.

This is bad and you should feel bad. Go make a donation to a rainforest bird sanctuary in EE's name to make up for this insanity.

Ballboy post, Lateral. We all expected better than this from you!

Lateral, you're a loyal poster, so I won't flame this.

Simply, no.

Votto's contract is pretty bad, no need to give up a premium guy like EE to get Votto.

Like I said, I probably wouldn't do it because of Votto's 10-year deal, but you could certainly argue Votto is the better offensive player, and he fits a team need for a quality (in this case elite) left-handed bat. If the Reds ate some of the contract and/or threw in a prospect or two, I'd seriously consider it.

But I respect the opinion of many posters on this board, and the consensus seems to be this is a bad idea. So I will accept that and move on :D

Maybe consider it if they had the same contract.

I was thinking that it wouldn't shock me if AA traded EE or Joey Bats this off season. But it would have to be a ridiculous return that is not a lateral type move.

Now that AA has essentially gone all in on this season no way EE or Bautista gets traded.

Votto is guaranteed 213 M over the next 9 years (Votto has a club option for a 10th year at 20 M, or a 7 M Buyout). That has to be factored in. My vote goes for keeping EE. Even if the Reds ate a chunk of that contract, i would still take EE over Votto.

You are probably right, but it wouldn't shock me if something happened, because we now have another middle of the order bat. I mean the deal would have to be amazing (like Johnny Cuento and Todd Frazier for Jose and Hutch for example).

It's a pipe dream to trade the cheaper/better player for the less good/more expensive player?

Bro; the guy is going to be making $25 million a year up until he's 40 years old. Are you high? I'm not trying to be mean, but any marginal improvement he brings is not worth that contract, period.

Reyes for Votto and Cincy eats 25 mil

(Hmmm - turns out Reds could actually use a " short stop")

Vottos got to have one of the worst contracts in all of baseball. Teams really need to smarten up and stop giving these 1st baseman long term contacts since it always seems to backfire badly. Long term contracts for Howard, Pujols, Fielder and Votto all have turned out poorly.

10 years/$225M (2014-23), plus 2024 club option

15:$14M
16:$20M
17:$22M
18:$25M
19:$25M
20:$25M
21:$25M
22:$25M
23:$25M
24:$20M club option ($7M buyout)

Plus a NTC

$25M annually in his age 35-40 seasons. What the **** were the Reds thinking?

I'd be looking to grab Jay Bruce after a down year instead. He'd be a good Melky replacement.
