He just released the following article, listing us in his top group of teams (along with the Cubs and Phillies) that he feels most confident will spend over their pool.

Its looking like that Vlad Guerrero Jr. speculation may be accurate...

what are the implications of this?
Is there a financial or draft pick penalty?

There's a financial penalty, and restrictions in international free agency the following year.

The IFA pool figures are low enough that, if you're going to go over it (and a single player can potentially put you over) you should really go over it. You'll be somewhat more limited the following year anyway, so splurge and eat the tax implications, as international free agents are cheap as dirt in the grand scheme even paying that premium. Franklin Barreto was the top-ranked IFA in his class, and we got him for $1.45m; all but a couple first rounders that year (and several beyond the first round proper) got more.

Has anyone read about any targets that we can drool on or is this the worst year to go all in

There are likely only two years remaining to go 'all in', as it's largely expected that some form of draft will come into being thereafter. If that's the case, and it's known prior to next year's IFA period, the 2016 IFA window is likely to be a massive free-for-all.

Also, Vlad Guerrero Jr is considered one of the best bats in the class, and it's been suggested that we have agreed a deal with him (though it isn't until July that we'll be able to announce it).

Edit: it's not difficult to tease out the fact that we're the team widely believed to have Guerrero locked down. McDaniel has stated that a team is believed to have an agreement in place, and that agreement would necessarily put the team above the IFA pool figure; consequently, it follows logically that the team mooted to sign him must be one of the three in his "almost definitely" category. He has also stated that the Cubs aren't that team. That leaves us and the Phillies; the latter is widely expected to blow the doors off in their quest to rebuild, but we'd be an odd inclusion if there wasn't something specific linking us to a big-money signing. Thus, Vlad Guerrero Jr confirmed.

I think it is almost guaranteed at this point that we have Vlad Jr. There is a new video of him posted a month ago in which he is decked out in Blue Jays gear. Supposedly it is from November 13th.

Wow that is somewhat jaw dropping.

Hopefully he and his father have more in common than their disdain for batting gloves. His swing doesn't look nearly as wiry as Vlad Sr's which I would say is probably a good thing.

He's not going to be his dad, just look at him. He's Miggy if it all goes well; Papi if it doesn't (speaking about his body, obviously hitting like Papi would still be pretty okay). IMO he's got 1B/DH written all over him, babyfat or not. Still, dat bat doe.

Love the comment:
OK, good, a lot of power but what happens in this situation, when he stars playing professional, he got a lot to work on learning how to drive the ball to the right field. But, he can use that power to the right field.. he is good tho.

I just don't see the logic in going opposite field during a HR derby. Maybe if it was BP...

I would rather see us go after guys who can hit and find a position for them later. I'd rather a Carlos Delgado than an Adeiny Hechavarria. Being good with the glove is great, and at the end of the day you need to play somewhere, but guys who can flat out hit make so much more sense IMO.

Your giving a teenage prospect a downside of David Ortiz. Good lord.

In body type, not performance.

Still think it is early to project his body type. 16 year old kids can go a few ways. Also I've seen guys who look like they can't run really move it. He seems athletic to me. Not athletic as in compared to ML average, but still he seems strong.

Didn't see it elsewhere, so might as well post it here: Kiley McDaniel a couple days ago, explicitly stating that we're the team widely believed to have an agreement with Guerrero Jr, for $3.2m.

I'm having a hard enough time waiting on pitchers and catchers reporting. News that I have to wait 'til July 2nd for confirmation is just cruel and unusual at this point of the offseason.

Are there any other players that the jays would spend their IFA $$ on? or is the Vlad Jr. signing it? I've heard names like moncada... though I could be confused/way out of touch.

The latest from Kiley

Vladimir Guerrero, Jr., RF, Dominican Video: Heavily rumored to have a deal with the Blue Jays for about $4.4 million (estimates vary a bit) that should be the biggest of this year’s class. Has advanced feel to hit and current plus raw power with some projection, but a pretty mature frame and only an average arm, with many suggesting he’ll end up at first base.

A tweet from a few days ago...

Kiley McDaniel ‏@kileymcd
Just heard Vladimir Guerrero Jr's deal with TOR may be for $3.5M, which, w/trades for the max 50% more pool, would allow TOR to stay under.

Doesn't necessarily mean anything aside from add a bit of doubt as to whether the Jays will in fact go beyond their pool.
