2015 MLB Draft thread (June 8 - 10): Jays take RHP Jon Harris 29th overall

Kiley McDaniel put out his April draft rankings, so we might as well have this thread. General consensus is that it's a very weak draft at the top, with opinions differing about the overall depth of the top couple rounds. Having surrendered our first rounder for Martin while picking one up in compensation after Melky departed, our picks are as follows:

1st round comp - 29th overall. Drafted: Jon Harris, RHP, Missouri State (JR)
2nd round - 56th.
3rd round - 91st.
4th round - 122nd.
And every thirtieth pick thereafter.

Our bonus pool overall is $5,411,000, 24th largest.

Some names who might be available when we make our first selection:

- Beau Burrows. Doesn't get much more Texas than that.
- Andrew Benintendi. I had a Benintendi 64.
- Demi Orimoloye. Really rolls off the tongue.
- Cornelius Randolph. We have to draft Cornelius Randolph dammit.

Maybe 'TJ' Aiken falls to the Jays at 29.

May fall much further if the rumours are true and there are issues with his elbow that go beyond the TJ.

Lots of interesting HS position players floating around our first pick. Ke'Bryan Hayes, Demi Orimoloye, Garrett Whitley, Eric Jenkins are guys that intrigue me.

Whitley's speed/bat-speed/power are intriguing for a cold weather prospect.

Ke'Bryan Hayes and Demi Orimoloye...two terrific sounding names, that I know nothing about.

Draft gurus, do we have any more awesome sounding names out there? Who is this years Rowdy Tellez?

I believe it's Dr. Cornelius Randolph the third.

That's much better.

I would hold off on Beau Burrows though. Jeff Burrows will for sure be the better Fabulous Burrows Boy.

Matt Garrioch published the first mock draft I've seen that extends far enough to cover the Jays. Lamentably, he has Professor Dr. Cornelius Randolph III, Esquire going one pick before us. We get Justin Hooper in his reckoning, a huge high school lefty with big stuff and bigger command problems:

29. Toronto Blue Jays

Justin Hooper, LHP, CA HS

The Blue Jays have shown in the past that they like big LHP's and Hooper is the best of that group this year. He was a top 10 pick potentially last summer but he didn't impress as much this spring.

As Hooper is a mainstay of my OOTP 15 teams, I approve.

In the second round he has us taking Jacob Nix, the poor bastard caught up in the Astros' Aiken affair last season.

His overall impression:

The draft this year is not short on talent. It is short on low risk talent.

Talent that has proven itself at a high level consistently. That is non-existent this year outside of Brendan Rogers and he hasn't even solidified himself as though I would have hoped, getting knocked out of the Florida state tournament early. This draft has as much talent as many drafts. Aiken was 1-1 last year and he's in this draft. He is hurt. No one knows for sure if he will regain his stuff but he was still a 1-1 talent. Matuella was discussed as a 1-1 talent. He has slipped due to injury as well, but he's still in this draft and may make a complete recovery. Phil Bickford has went 10th overall in the past with nearly identical stuff to what he has now. There is a lot of talent here. I've had sources from multiple teams tell me I'm wrong but that is because their job is on the line. They want safe talent and they are equating high risk to talent to lack of talent. I disagree with that.

There is talent that will get drafted late and develop into 1st round talent in three years. Maybe it's Matt McGarry, Daniel Reyes, Jake Lochner or Bryan Hoeing. I don't know and neither do scouts. I'm going to sit down when I do my draft board to try to find those guys but it's not easy. That's the problem. They want security and safety but it lacks that. It is high on risk, not low on talent. To me, there is a big difference.

Given that we're drafting late in the first owing to the Martin signing, that works out well enough for us.

Keith Law's mock has us taking HS CF Eric Jenkins (who I mentioned in a post above ;) ). He also conveniently mentions that we are also on SS Richie Martin from Florida (BA's mock has us taking Martin), as well as HS RHP's Justin Maese and Brady Singer.

Maese is a big pop-up prospect from Texas who has started hitting 96 mph (although not holding that velocity yet) with a mid 80's slider this spring.

Kiley McDaniel's latest mock doesn't extend down to our pick (though that's somewhat pointless; we're at the mercy of many teams above), but does include a couple tidbits. He mentions HS 3B Ke'Bryan Hayes, Jenkins (with a note that we're the most closely-connected team), and Martin as likely targets, if available.

Most don't seem to value Hayes as highly as Duke Cornelius VII of Randolph owing to the His Corneliusness' power, but his hit tool is excellent, he should have some pop, and he stands a good chance of stick at 3B owing to his arm.

Jenkins is an insanely fast OF, who makes pretty good contact and stands a chance to have fringy power when he ceases to be a stick figure. Archetypal HS CF, basically.

Martin's coming off a 2014 Cape Cod campaign that got him talked about as a potential top pick...followed by a 2015 season with Florida that has seen him fall quite a bit. He should be an above-average SS at any level, and can run a fair bit, but it's more than a little nervy to spend a top 30 pick on a guy who has been as inconsistent at the plate as has Martin.

Weird, I'm pretty sure that Hayes tidbit wasn't in the original draft of that mock that I saw. I only remember "many spots from 20-35 could be homes" being mentioned.

Jenkins is definitely getting a lot of run from multiple sides. Of course with pick 29 the actual selection will be influenced heavily by what happens in front of us. Jenkins is a pretty dead-on match for the type of position player that the Jays tend to like.

Matt Garrioch Top 400:

http://www.minorleagueball.com/2015/5/3 ... -prospects

and the always useful Age Breakdown of top prospects:

http://www.minorleagueball.com/2015/5/2 ... top-talent

The youngest top prospect in the draft is speedy Canadian CF Miles Gordon from Oakville (17.65 years old) who will undoubtedly garner a lot of Pompey comparison's given his skillset and absurdly young age relative to his draft class. We were able to steal Pompey, I don't think we'll have that same luxury with Gordon who I could see going as high as the 3rd or 4th round.

I think I started this in 2013. It's funny looking back at it a year later. This was me last year.

Want: Holmes, Gettys, Gillaspie, Monte Harrison, Hoffman
Wouldn't Mind; Chavis, Beede, Freeland, Davidson, Weaver
Worried About/Hesitant About Us Picking: Finnegan, Fedde, Howard, Wilson, Forrest Wall
Deck McGuire Clones/Stay Away From: Reid-Foley, Dillion Peters, Daniel Gossett, Jace Fry, Skoglund

And now this year.
Want: Mitch Hansen, Chandler Day, Justin Hooper, Jackson Kowar, Demi Orimoyole, Chris Shaw,
Wouldn’t Mind:, Bryan Hoeing, Triston McKenzie, Alonzo Jones, Bryan Hudson, Mike Soroka
Worried About/Hesitant About Us Picking: Michael Mantuella, Kevin Newman, Alex Young, Blake Trahan, Drew Finney
Deck McGuire Clones/Stay Away From: Cody Ponce, James Kaprielian, Nathan Kirby, Kyle Molnar, David Hill

Schad and Met, who are your wants, guys you wouldn’t mind if we took, the guys you’re hesitant about us picking and the guys you absolutely don’t want heading into next week Monday?

Not sure I can fill all of those categories as I have a bad habit of gravitating towards guys I "like", and ultimately tend to look past guys I wouldn't take to the point where I'd have a hard time compiling a list of them. These things also typically end up being way too HS heavy for me.

Guys I like (that actually may be available to us):

RHP Mike Nikorak
RHP Beau Borrows
RHP Austin Smith
OF Kep Brown
IF/OF Ryan Mountcastle
C Chris Betts
RHP Chandler Day
3B Ke'Bryan Hayes
OF Miles Gordon

Guys I don't mind:

OF Eric Jenkins
SS Richie Martin
OF Demi Orimoloye
RHP Mike Soroka

Brady (TJ) Aiken medicals are out, but he's only giving them to high ranking execs that request it and that he approves of first...plot gets thicker...article says he can go anywhere from 10-60.

Look out for a few HS pitchers from Illinois who I feel could be Blue Jay targets. Maybe I'm just overshooting, but the guys in charge of decision making seem to have some confidence with regards to the area scout(s) (Jeff Johnson I believe) covering Illinois with Ryan Borucki, Daniel Lietz, Jake Latz, Ryan Houck, and Mike Papierski (all didn't sign) being highish picks the last three years. Houck had a big freshman season and is an early favourite to go very high in the 2017 draft.

The guys I'm talking about:

LHP Bryan Hudson: Huge projectable kid at 6'7, touted as the best HS P from Illinois since Mike Foltynewicz in 2010.
RHP Fitz Stadler: Even taller than Hudson at 6'8
RHP Kyle Ostrowski

The Jays have used high picks on tall prep HS pitchers in three straight drafts with Matt Smoral, Evan Smith, and Nick Wells. A guy like Hudson would probably intrigue them a lot in the 2nd round if he's still there.

I didn't like the fact that he had no plus pitches at the time. Guess we'll have to see whether or not I was right or wrong on the guy.
