12th Rounder DJ McKnight Will Sign

McKnight played two seasons at Tallahassee Community College, completing his sophomore year as an All-Panhandle Conference selection. He will forego a scholarship opportunity at Valdosta State College for a chance to live his dream.

He reports to the Blue Jays’ rookie short season in Dunedin on Saturday and is expected to sign a contract Sunday morning.

Encina, a tall right-handed pitcher, has been the staff ace of the Cardinals for the past three seasons, but plans to sign with Toronto following the selection. "I was definitely eager to see my name on the board," said Encina. "Toronto called around the 15th round and said they were going to draft me soon. It is a great feeling to get drafted."

Being drafted by any organization was amazing. Being drafted by the Blue Jays? Are you kidding? This was a dream wrapped up in a wish, slathered in years of hope. And now it was real. Until the day he dies, he can now tell his kids and grandkids and great-grandkids he'd been drafted by the hometown team.

He understands that being taken with pick No. 1,172 means he's a long-shot to ever see a Blue Jays' uniform. All he wanted was a shot and he now has that.

"You want to say (he has to) beat the odds?" he says. "At the end of the day, we all have the same odds. We have to swing the same bat and hit the same pitches."

Where that will happen, he's not sure. He's been playing with the Intercounty Guelph Royals but that's done. He doesn't want to risk an injury. He'll go where the Jays assign him and then start the long climb to the majors.

By my count, we're $578,900 under slot value after signing 7 of our first 10 picks. It's been reported that Singer will be signing at slot value. Not sure what Espada would have signed for and Young is a college junior, so we should see some savings there too.

Now, where will we spend the savings? If we maintain the savings we can offer someone drafted after the 10th round a bonus equivalent to ~80th overall selection.
