The Cardinal Way = Hacking The Astros

This is amazing.The FBI reportedly found evidence that St. Louis Cardinals officials broke into the Houston Astros’ internal database of player personnel information, according to the New York Times. Parts of that database, including updates on trade negotiations, were then published on Deadspin. The bureau has subpoenaed the team and MLB, and while no specific individuals have been named, this has the potential to be one of the biggest and weirdest scandals in baseball history.
The breach involves a database created by Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow, who used to work with the Cardinals and ran a similar database in St. Louis. It appears that Luhnow used the same passwords in both places, leaving the database open to mischief:

forget the MLB head office.... the FBI is investigating this... and their considering a serious crime. Espionage. This could get real serious, real fast.
I wouldn't be surprised if their are criminal charges on the way.

Investigators have uncovered evidence that Cardinals officials broke into a network of the Houston Astros that housed special databases the team had built, according to law enforcement officials. Internal discussions about trades, proprietary statistics and scouting reports were compromised, the officials said.
The attack represents the first known case of
corporate espionage in which a professional sports team has hacked the network of another team.
The Cardinals officials under investigation have not been put on leave, suspended or fired.

Sounds like the Cards just logged in....
But really, what kind of value would the Cards get from this? Names and birthdays of the Astros' minor leaguers? A few tidbits on trades involving other teams, usually involving middling players? How many suststantive trades ya figure the Astros are actively working on at a time?

Knowing what value the Astros place on every single major league and minor league player they track is pretty substantial. All of a sudden minor leaguer X isn't just someone you're going to throw into a trade with them, if you know they really like him. notes on amateur players they are scouting. Contract negotiation notes, etc.. That's a big deal.
They did just log in. That's against the law. I am pretty sure the FBI doesn't accept the Costanza 'Was that wrong?' defense either.

The crazy thing is that after getting the Astros data, from their own homes or whatever, they then posted that **** on Anonbin for the world to see, letting the Astros know they had the data.
Also, what the **** were the Astros system admins doing?

The same most sysadmins seem to do: assuming something isn't a problem until it's become a very big problem.

You know people bring this up with the DefLategate and the Patriots too. And I hear ya, the competitive advantage you get is almost nothing.
So why the F do it. The upside is minimal and the downside is...well...significant.

This is also the point where I'll remind people that the hack revealed that we were willing to trade Stroman for Bud Norris in 2013...but appear to have balked at including Gose:
[Blue Jays GM Alex Anthopoulos] texted [Luhnow] and asked what it would take for Norris. AA said Aaron Sanchez is off the table but might be willing to talk about anyone else.
[Alex Anthopoulos] texted [Luhnow] and asked what a package around Stroman might look like. JL said Stoman + Gose would be in consideration.
And were, in that offseason, interested in moving him in a 'smaller' deal:
[Alex Anthopoulos] said Lawrie was untouchable. Sounded like they might consider a smaller deal for Stroman but later in off season.

It's pretty disturbing. Imagine if we traded Stroman for Bud freaking Norris to go along with all the other prospects we've dealt?

If every team had their data dumped, I guarantee that there'd be near-misses for all. Still, yeah...that's a particularly painful close call. Shipping Stroman, Syndergaard and the rest for middling players in a span of a couple years would've been the end of sanity itself.

It's not so much nearly making that deal as much as it is frightening that the man who traded Syndergaard, was willing to trade Stroman, and identified Sanchez as untouchable, is still the GM of this team. Nevermind that he was willing to halt the development of two 20-year old prospects by putting them in the big league pen out of A-Ball. Makes me a little more nervous about the trade deadline than I was before I read that post.
